  • His stick got old several years ago. Tell me did he say players are different now days?

    • He has now alluded of the changing attitude of players. He sounded to me like a coach that feels the heat, but still in denial of his eternal existence in the overall scheme of things.

      • Every time he uses the old "players are different" line he is really just pointing out that he is old and unwilling to adapt. Otherwise players being different now days isn't an excuse.

        • A lot of other programs seem to make do with the "new" attitude athlete. It's all about coaching with your eyes wide open and sometimes making appropriate changes on the fly.

          • It doesn't matter if players are different today. He is Gene f'ing Stephenson. He is god and if he can't make these players better no one will.

                    • Listening to Gene on the podcast

This old dude said he is going to double down on the hit and run. Holy crap balls.

He did say he might...just might consider over recruiting. I'm not a fan of it but if thats what everybody else is doing how do you expect to compete otherwise?

                      • Yeah, I just listened to the podcast as well. He doesn't sound like he will change his approach, they just need to do a better job convincing and teaching the players how to execute.

Regarding the hit and run, which Gene said he much prefers over the sac bunt, he said that they did not have any successfully executed hit and runs in 60 games this year. He also said this team was lousy at bunting for base hits also.

He strongly reiterated his loyalty and confiidence in JT so there will not be any changes in that regard.

He said he felt no job pressure. They still have never had a losing season. He said he would always put more pressure on himself than others do. He said if the powers that be decide they don't want him around anymore than so be it. But he wasn't concerned. I don't think there is any chance he will be voluntarily stepping aside until his contract is fulfilled.

He was as feisty (and stubborn) as ever.

I will give Gene some credit for trying to compete without playing the over-recruiting game and for staying with the kids he signs and I admire him for that. He said he may have to become a little more callous and perhaps play the over-recruiting game a little although you could tell he doesn't like doing that. More likely is that we will see more and more non-renewal of scholarships if a player is not producing.

                        • Sounded to me though that it's the over recruiting that protects the schools from signing juniors then turns out they don't develop any further along between signing and college. He acted as though schools sign 20 + players. Well you may hate it or it may be overblown by Gene to be an excuse but if this is the case and WSU wants to compete then they better start doing it.

                          • I think you need to be careful with the over-recruiting then dumping kids before they ever show up. Seems to me that might work in the short-run but might come back to bite you in the long run.

Not renewing a scholarship for a player who is just not performing as well as anticipated though is something I think probably can be done as long as it doesn't get too out-of-hand. If that gets too out-of-hand would be an indication to me that the recruiting effort is poor.
