@Ricardo del Rio, I guess the point I was trying to make (and obviously failed doing) is that I can't argue with those that, emotionally speaking, say the program is Gene's to do with what he wants on his terms. That I understand that loyalty. And I can't argue against the loyalty. Like you, I do disagree, but I can't tell someone that's been a fan for 36 years that their loyalty to the man that built the program, literally, from the ground up is less important than my desires.
Yes, I want a change. I just can't tell those fans they are wrong.
I've really become torn for the last 12 hours or so. I'm thinking I'm behind your stance, Doc. The more I think about it, the dumber I feel about telling the Gene supporters to bug off. That was probably wrong of me considering they have numerous ties to the program, the man, over the last 36 years. For them, and pretty much everybody, WSU baseball was made known thanks to Gene. It wouldn't be where it it has been without him.
This is VERY shaky ground. I dunno if there is a right answer. Does he earn the right to go out how he wants to? Or is there too much damage that has been done? It's quite a dilemna that I hadn't experienced yet before. I guess when it has come down to crunch time, I'm getting more and more unsure on how things should go down.
Ugh.
Deuces Valley.
... No really, deuces.

@ShockerFever:, I think you agree with me that it hurts.
And unfortunately, I don't believe anything is going to happen from Gene to make us feel better. And perhaps it shouldn't. Maybe this time, we as demanding fans, we'll have to do what Brent says so often and "wear this one".
Thanks for everything Gene. You are a legend and will always be appreciated for what you brought to this university for many years. I think a fresh break will be good for everyone and good luck at Auburn next year Gene.

That's exactly what I'd expect. As I said on here recently, I don't think Gene wants to stop short of 2000, although whether he can find a situation that lends itself to that goal is unclear. Would going elsewhere rejuvenate him for a few years?

I truly believe he is not going to stop until he becomes the #1 winningiest coach. He is younger than both the guy in front of him and the only guy behind him that would have a chance of passing him up anytime soon. I wish he would break the record at WSU, but I guess that is not going to happen. I only hope when he does get the record, they do at least mention that most of the wins came while he was at WSU.

Are the times and landscape of college baseball now that make WSU a harder spot to sustain Top 10 type success, or is it Gene and the rest of the staff themselves that is causing it? That's the million dollar question. If it's the latter, then the AD made the right move and WSU baseball should be relevant again within the next few years. If it's the former, then this decision may come down to haunt Sexton. I realize it's more than just about that question, if you have a mass exodus of donors and fans leaving or not supporting the program, hands may be tied. Again, I'm just worried in 5 years from now if we're coming off 4 consecutive losing seasons and then we're in big time trouble.
Again, is this the landscape of college baseball that makes a place like WSU in a league like the Valley not a hotbed anymore or is it the coaching? Gene has history and tradition on his side. Would it have been better to error on the side of caution and let him live it out? The next coach knows he's gonna have big shoes to fill and big time expectations to fulfill. Can all of that be attained?
Double ugh.

It's just a hunch. Have heard that an SEC program has already been in touch about an opening and Auburn is the only SEC program with a spot open right now.
