What happened? I had to jump on a conference call.
The wheels came off in the bottom of the 6th. Caden Favors starting the 6th on the mound for the Shocks: Home run, single. Grayson Jones came on in relief: Double, but runner on 1st thrown out at the plate, and walk. Jace Miner came in to pitch: Walk, double, walk. Ryan Stuempfig came in to pitch: single and home run. 8 runs on 6 hits and 3 walks.
Denning Gerig is doing a great job on radio. You can hear him getting more comfortable each game. We are blessed with Mike, Shane, and now Denning. I saw in the game notes that every home game will be on ESPN+, so we’ll probably see a bunch of each of them.
Now these ORU broadcasters… what a bunch of homers. If I didn’t know better I’d think we’re playing Texas.
1. No full rides. This has a huge impact as much of the money for players is academic based. Meaning there are lots of quality players who have to go JUCO or just quit playing, shrinking the player pool.
2. Recruiting. Due to smaller player pool, many kids get recruited as soon as they are able to, know what money they are going to get, and pick that school well in advance.
3. Timing. The top pitchers typically rise to the top very early. Very few burst onto the scene like an FVV or a late bloomer with little exposure like RB.
4. JUCO. Most of these kids are placed by bigger programs (think EO) and already know where they are going to go. If they don’t make the grades, then they disappear.
A great example: It is extremely hard to recruit kids out of Louisiana. They have a program called “TOPS” that basically says if you make a minimum GPA among certain courses, you can go to an in-state school for free. Several states have similar programs, and some states offer that amount (similar to what WSU does for OK/TX offering I -state rates), but that still leaves a lot of money on the players/parents.
Pitchers are the thing that most separates the haves from the have nots. And most of those kids are locked up 2 years in advance. BK or Alan Dunn (two of the best Pitching Coaches ever) can only do so much.
