  • AAC Tournament Thread

The Shocks are in and ready to do battle as the #8 seed in the AAC tournament vs #1 ECU Tuesday afternoon.

    Championship Central

    Reasons to be optimistic
    • McGinness is rolling and just torched ECU a week or so ago.
    • While we're the No. 8 seed, we're No. 5 in the conference in RPI per Warren Nolan. Here's the breakdown:
    5. ECU
    28. UConn
    40. Houston
    45. UCF
    92. Wichita State
    97. Tulane
    112. Cincinnati
    118. Memphis
    • Life is good and the baby Jesus loves us.
    • Beer.

    Reasons to be pessimistic
    • McGinness might keep us in it against ECU, but we likely can't score enough to take advantage.
    • While we're the No. 5 RPI team, we're also 50-plus numbers below the next closest team in our side of the bracket. (Roughly the same gap between us and a really crappy team like #140 Missouri State.)
    • Pick any baseball thread at random for myriad other reasons.
    • We're insignificant specks in a massive, churning universe and time soon will utterly destroy and erase from memory all that we know and everyone we love.
    • Strawberry Lemonade Natty Lite is actually a thing.

“The rebellion on the populist right against the results of the 2020 election was partly a cynical, knowing effort by political operators and their hype men in the media to steal an election or at least get rich trying. But it was also the tragic consequence of the informational malnourishment so badly afflicting the nation. ... Americans gorge themselves daily on empty informational calories, indulging their sugar fixes of self-affirming half-truths and even outright lies.'

ECU is reserving AAC Pitcher of the Year Jake Agnos and is going with midweek starter Alec Burleson, a second-team all conference lefty who is 5-1 with a 3.12 ERA. Shocks are all in with McGinness. All games will stream live on the AAC Digital Network Facebook page.

That is interesting. ECU trying to setup Butler for a contract extension.

        Very crafty of them, SB.

ECU played WSU in regionals back in the Gene era -- I believe I remember watching them in Wichita -- and recognize the Shocks as a sleeping giant, so they don't want the wakeup call of a new coach to be administered.

This is a little bit surprising considering that the AAC throws in an extra day of rest for the Game 1 starters with the Championship game on Sunday. Should not be any problem to get 2 starts out of your #1 guy if you can get that far. Would be interesting to hear what their thinking is in this regard. OTOH ECU did very little offensively against Clayton McGinness 10 days ago.

Coming through the loser's bracket after an opening round loss is not particularly easy.

On a side note, the weather in Clearwater this week is looking pretty damn good for baseball.

It’s about setting up to win next week and the week after ECU. No reason to screw with regular days off. It’s not that they don’t want to win or care if they win or not, they’re the best team here by far and have bigger goals. The guy tomorrow is plenty good anyway, Hopefully Clayton will continue his run and give us a chance.

I am expecting another good outing from Clayton. He clearly is pitching well but just as importantly, perhaps more importantly he is taking the mound with great self confidence.

Good point about ECU, Doc. I know that actually happens, because I can still remember when WSU would be playing its conference tournament mainly for seeding afterwards.

An addendum to the broadcast options: Cox 22 will have the game, as well.

Game time will be 45 minutes after the UConn / Houston game which is currently in the 2nd inning. UConn just went on top 2-0 with a two-out, two-run homer.

Houston and UConn tied at 3 in the ninth. UConn has used five pitchers and three of those went 2 innings or more and would likely be burned for tomorrow's loser's bracket game if they lost (winners today get a day off tomorrow). Houston has used three but got 6 innings from their starter, so they're in better shape.

UConn, like ECU did not go with their No. 1 guy, Mason Feole. Looks like Houston did go with their No. 1 guy.

If the Live Stats info is right, today's ECU starter came into the game having not given up an unearned run all season. Look at some of this year's Shocker pitchers by comparison.

As we can remember from bygone times, defense comes in handy for a good team -- as does having your pitcher pick up his teammates when they boot one. Unearned runs for the other guys are just as damaging on the scoreboard as those that count against a pitcher's ERA.

And here is where the wheels fall off - for better or worse. 5th inning. Leadoff single for ECU, McGinness can't field the bunt. Runners on 1st and 2nd, nobody out.

                  Bottom 5th 1-1.

ECU gets one past O'Brien for a single. Sac bunt misplayed by McGinness, runners on 1st and 2nd. Sac bunt by the 9-hole hitter leaves runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out. Leadoff hitter intentional walk - loads bases. Fly out to left - not deep enough to score the runner from 3rd. Grounder up the middle SS to 2B for 3rd out. Whew!

McGinness with 85 pitches through 5.
The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.

ECU's Burleson is at 83 pitches so might get 2 more innings out of each of the starters if they avoid trouble. Although they might stretch them out a bit in a Tournament game.

After 6, still 1-1. McGinness at 101 pitches.

                    Top of 7th - Boyer with a 1 out double. Ritter - K - 2 out. Boyer steals 3rd without a throw. O-Brien - K Still 1-1

This is about as exciting as it gets for offense in this game.
