If the thought is that Coy should come back and work on his game, and all year long all the talk was how the current coaching staff is not teaching the players anything, especially on hitting and fielding, then why would Coy want to come back? Who will help him with his game? He has just as good of a chance of developing his game in A ball with a team that might have a good infield and hitting coach, right?

With all the prospects both major and minor leagues WSU has sent who taught them how to field and hit. Was it Tom Thumb

i would say the younger stephenson and thomas and kemnitz taught them, but the current version of them doesn't seem to be doing so well.

I haven't read all the threads about the draft and Coy's fall in the draft.. Has it been mentioned or suggested that maybe Johnny made it pretty clear he was planning on returning to WSU for at least another year? If MLB thought it would be difficult or impossible to sign him, that would cause his draft status to drop like a rock.

What position would Coy project to in pro ball? You don't see many right-handed guys playing first base.

texiera, konerko, hafner throws right, believe votto throws right, pujols, derek lee, brett wallace, deric barton, miguel cabrera, gabby sanchez, prince fielder, justin morneau. quite a few right handed throwers at first. the fact that there are more lefties than righties at first typically at any level has nothing to do with it being a competitive advantage. it just means right handers can play anywhere on the diamond while lefties are limited in positions so that is a position they are usually put when they are younger.

I don't think Coy was planning on returning if the situation was right for him to move on. Perhaps the scouts saw a hole in his game, or they weren't willing to draft him where he thought he belonged so they basically passed all together (knowing that signability after round 10 would be difficult).

One of Johnny's relative's posted the following on the MLB Draft thread:

Toronto called Johnny at 9:00 am the morning of the 2nd day of the draft. I believe 2 rounds were completed. They wanted to know exactly what it would take to sign him. Johnny was advised not to give a specific dollar figure to any team. He has stated all year to scouts that it would AT LEAST take top 5 round money for him to sign, but that wasn't even a guarantee. He enjoys playing at Wichita State and obviously would benefit from another year of college baseball. Everyone knows this year was a very tough season for Johnny, but he still managed to make 1st Team All-Conference and had 59 rbi as a sophomore. He expects to have a breakout season at WSU next year. Toronto did call after drafting him and told him they will watch him very closely in the Cape this summer.

I think O'Brien example shows that just coming back and having a great year doesn't mean translate in huge change in draft status.

An elite player draft status is made or broken by how well he does in the elite summer ball league like the cape that use wood bats before their junior year. Coy is in the cape this summer and this will determine how he will be looked at next year.

Of course the rub is since he has was draft eligible there is a catch 22 - if he does well this summer he will probably be signed and won't even make it to his junior year. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

The Bourne Braves opened their Cape Cod schedule tonight losing 2-0.

Johnny was not in the lineup nor is he currently listed on the Bourne Roster. Could be he has not made his way to New England yet.

Looks like the Bourne Braves could use Johnny's bat. Maybe it is the adjustment to the wood bats but the Braves are 1-3 despite only allowing 5 runs in 4 games. They have only scored twice in those games and one of those runs was unearned.

They have lost 2-0, 2-0, and 1-0 before picking up their first win of the season by a 2-0 score yesterday.

Johnny has not been listed in any of the box scores so far.
