The link above is a transcript from mlb tv. It was a round table discussion with Harold Reynolds, John Hart, and Greg Amsinger. They discussed who had the most "pure power" in the entire draft. Harold Reynolds picked Johnny Coy from Wichita State. By no means, am I agreeing with Harold Reynolds, but he is hearing that from someone. With that being said, I hope my earlier post about the events that happened are believed and people don't honestly think that he had no interest until the 45th round. That is a pretty harsh comment saying how big a fall he took from the 7th round out of high school down to the 45th in college without even knowing the entire situation. Our team and players deserved negative criticism for the way they played at times this year from this board, but not telling the WSU fans the truth about his draft situation would not be fair to Johnny who is a committed WSU baseball player.

There is no question that Johnny has outstanding power (when he makes solid contact). If he can prove he can make that contact more consistently (especially vs RH pitching) then I have not doubt the pros will by very interested in Johnny.
I also believe another year for Johnny to work in his defense would be beneficial for him also.
I apologize if you took my comment about falling from 7th to 45th in the draft so personally. I was simply pointing out that that was a significant drop. I am not an insider so I have no color to add to that. I thank you for taking the time to fill us in. Not sure why you accuse me of not telling the truth. I stated everything I knew. That he fell from 7th to 45th in the draft.
I also pointed out that Tim Kelley did not get drafted.
Johnny may have a great year in the Cape and they sign him. More power (no pun intended) to him. If not, I hope he has a great year for the Shocks next year although I am concerned if we can put a lineup around Johnny that will keep teams from pitching around him.

Remember Johnny is just a sophomore. He has a couple more years left to sign. He will have lots of bargaining power next year.
I think the only reason he was drafted so late is that the scouts already knew that he intends to return to WSU next year.

Going out on a limb here but I've got a hunch about JC. I think, some time in the future, everything is going click into place for him and he could end up with a long big league career. I just hope it clicks while he is wearing a Shocker uniform.

Coy
JC obviously has plenty of upside at the plate, and the tools to try to achieve it. But Coy strikes out a lot, and he has a poor K/W ratio. So he has lots of work to do (and I hope he succeeds, and does so at WSU -- but players who dramatically improve their tendency to swing and miss are rare, as are those who dramatically improve their K/W ratio). He also has lots of improvement to make defensively.
He seems like a great candidate to return, have a big year, and clean up in next year's draft as a junior.

I don't have any stats to back this up but I would suspect that 6'8" players usually have a high K/W ratio. Large strike zones usually help a pitcher and when combined with long arms usually don't produce a compact swing. Hopefully, he can learn to compact his swing more and improve his eye (knowledge of the strike zone) which will boost his production in this area. I look forward to this happening to him as a Shocker.
