We'll be lucky to finish .500 next year. I suspect Grimes and O'Brien will be going pro after the season concludes.

Not to mention that Kelley will be gone. Lowell will turn pro. Flynn might go pro. Springer will be gone. Coy might go pro, although he has not had a great season.

So yes, a sub .500 season next year is a distinct possibility.

I'm sure they'll all get drafted by someone. Most likely David Chadd and the Tigers.

the bad thing - Grimes really had a good game in the field with 2 excellent plays - pissed away because Gene wouldn't make the move to replace his closer who just wasn't there mentally or physically. Gene owes the fans and more importantly the team an apology for not doing his job he's paid to do - manage.

BTW, somebody might want to wake up that has-been for a pitching coach and telling him staff blew another.

Grimes really did have one of his best games, if not his best game, defensively tonight. If Mike's calls were accurate he made 3 outstanding plays tonight and also handled all the routine plays.

However, I have been saying all along that Tyler's defense was only one of the many problems this team has. Trying to deal with all those problems is like playing Whack-A-Mole. It's very hard to predict which one will raise its head next.

Gene doesn't want to leave before he overtakes Augie for most wins. Gene is waiting for Augie to retire and then a season or two after, Gene will retire.

I can't say I blame him. However, he needs to get some priorities straight and get a fire in his belly again. I'm not sure of the inner workings of the program that is limiting his ability to be successful. ADES needs to work through those issues with Gene. Gene has great fan support, tradition, facilities.... What's holding him back?

ADES should fire JT if Gene won't and hire Gene's successor as an assistant coach. To me, JT is 80% of the problem.

A similar situation existed between Bobby Bowden chasing Joe Paterno's record. FSU fans would not tolerate the sub-par seasons the Seminoles were having toward the end of Bowden's career. It may be easier for program as huge as FSU's to get rid of a historic coach than it is for a baseball program, but I feel Gene is not immune. It will happen three ways, Gene retires with dignity and passes on the torch. He continues to coach because our AD is afraid to pull the trigger, or Gene is 'forced' to retire rather than getting canned.

I think just that one personnel move could change the entire complexion of the program. JT has needed to go for a while, and the picture just gets clearer every year.

Now will Gene can JT? Doubt it, as I'm sure most of you do too. The Captain will go down with the ship, with the 1st and 2nd Mate right by his side.

It was extremely difficult to fire a legend. They should put up a statue of the trustee, Jim Smith who finally publically called for Bobby's resignation and to TK Wetherell, the President who fired Bowden. Both men resigned after the deed was performed so as to allow the fan base to heal without them being lightning rods.

It takes energy in highly competitive coaching world to keep up with recruiting, X's and O's, changes in the game, etc.

Bobby was an 80 year old...a great coach in his day, but that day was past.

Like JoPa, Gene is probably thinking every year that this year will be the year that it turns around for him. But JoPa has a lot of help as he watches games from his recliner up in the skybox.
