Hang in there Tyler. Looking back at the record books a couple of our future MLBers ( Blake, Lansing) had some pretty high single season error totals too.

Of course they played on much better teams and it was easier to hide any problems that they may have had.
Let's hope he can hit a D-1 Curve ball!

If we need his bat, we should be trying to hide him somewhere other than shortstop

I'd rather have a Mr Consistency that takes a linear improvement model in contrast to some one always trying to make a "major league" play and screws the pooch 10% of the time. His offensive stats look great! His defensive stats are a joke and a pro coach would be in his face teaching him to play within his limitations and "grow the skillset."
He seems like a raw talent on the defensive end and JT simply hasn't done a good job of developing him to play at this level of college ball.

Just another example of why JT has got to be the worst coach in WSU history for any sport.
I don't want to join this conversation because I do not like picking on individual players ... but ... objectively as I can and from the stands watching nearly every home game and a few on the road ...

Tyler makes some very spectacular plays and he has a gun for an arm. His errors are generally not on throws, especially when he has fielded the ball cleanly. It seems like most mis-plays come on routine or nearly routine plays. Perhaps a bit mental / lack of concentration and perhaps some really subtle mechanical or technique related problem. When he gets rushed, he sometimes makes poor decisions, i.e. if he fumbles a ball, or makes a spectacular stop sometimes he should just eat it instead of makiing the throw.

Grimes has committed more errors this season than his first two seasons combined, which would indicate that the problem has migrated to his brain, which is unfortunate. I have wondered if a couple games off might clear his mind, but he's played almost every inning of every game.

JT has coached a lot of extremely good 2B and SS and I think he is solid at teaching fielding at those positions. I think you're waaaay off the mark criticizing JT for his ability to coach fielders. When it is working the Grimes/Davidson/Coy double play is a thing of beauty.

Dusty Coleman wasn't that great a fielder, but he got a pro contract after his sophomore season. Conor Gillaspie wasn't a very good fielder, but the pros are looking for hitters. They can hide poor fielders a few places if a guy can hit. Honestly, the Shox don't have that luxury as there aren't many (or any) real viable alternatives at SS.

          --'85.
          Good input ~ thanks.

I think you're right about the pros looking for hitters. In the few times I've seen Tyler play, I've notice an amazing amount of talent but scratch my head at his decisions in the field. To me this is a coaching issue. In pro ball, this gets straightened out pretty quickly as they will teach him when to eat it and when to try for it - something JT has been unable to do.

In reading some articles, it seems Tyler and JT are cut from the same player cloth, and Tyler might be just a bit obstinate in taking feedback from JT. Perhaps it's a lack of respect for his coach.

I'm personally not a big fan of JT and thinks as a coach he contributes absoloutely nothing. Some guys can't make the transition from playing to coaching and JT is one of those guys IMO.

3rd base would be a good spot to start. You can hide his bobbles there and he has a strong enough arm to play the position. Unfortunately, as I said earlier, Tyler is one of Gene's Boys, so he'll play SS until he goes pro. Gene's basically given up on this season anyway, so he'll just shrug off Tyler's mistakes and pretend they don't happen.

You guys kill me. Tyler has struggled in the field this year, NO DOUBT. However, I would like to remind you of a couple of things. 1. He doesn't to the best of my knowledge collect a paycheck to play, so lay off a little and realize he like all these guys are young and get wrapped up in the game and try to make plays they shouldn't at times and pay the price. 2. With the old codger as the head coach who does nothing but wear these guys out on a daily basis with his negativity, all it does is get in these guys heads. Quite frankly, I don't know how any of these guys can focus with Gene doing nothing more than throwing these guys under the bus all the time.

What I am really disappointed in tonight is that this board is continuing to talk about Tyler and the need to either sit him or move him. Were any of you at the ballgame tonight? He made at least 4 plays (with 0 errors I might add) tonight that no one, and I mean NO ONE on this team could have made, 2 of which saved runs, yet not one post has come to his defense and say Great Game Tyler, lets try to do that on a consistent basis. I am here to say it ......Great Game Tyler!!! Keep up the effort and know that some of us believe in you and your amazing abilities.

He might be having a sub par fielding season so far, but try and give some credit where credit is do, and tonight Tyler Grimes deserves some freaking credit for some incredible fielding plays, and how about some acknowledgement for making the routine plays that so many of you point out for every single one that is missed.

                This.

If coaches treated their players/teams like this anywhere else in organized baseball - (whether we're
talking youth leagues, high school, or minor/major leagues), they would be gone in short order.

Only here in the fantasy-land of 'Gene's world' is this crap still considered "acceptable".

How long will Gene (and his minions) continue to get a free pass?

How many more years of declining performance will it take?

We're looking at a distinct possibility of becoming a sub-.500 program very soon
(maybe as soon as next year), because as the Shockers program continues to weaken,
the Valley might be getting relatively stronger (+Dallas Baptist?).

And with not much room left to further 'soften-up' the non-conference schedule
(ND State, Niagara, etc.), the future isn't looking all that great.
although the best things in life are free, upgrades are usually available

Great game Tyler... Keep up the good work. Don't let some of us get to you. I do pull for your success. I just pull for the team's success a bit harder.
                  Great game!

Wow! Are you his White Knight? You are mistaken if you even, just a little, think any of us want to see TG fail and love to pile on the guy when he screws up. On the contrary, all of us would love to see him become a successful player on and off the field. However, as fans we have the right to point out glaring issues that have cost games for this team.

All we want is some consistency. We all realize errors are going to happen, but a trend developed long ago with his fielding that troubles us. What frustrates me is that Tyler does need a break from the field to get his mind right, but we have no one on the bench who could fill in, IMO.

On a more positive note, hopefully last night's performance brings back his confidence.

So we should give him credit for finally catching routine balls and not throwing it away or bobbling it? Basically doing what a high level D-1 SS is supposed to do on game to game basis.
I'd rather have a SS make the routine plays all the time and rarely make the spectacular play.

True, he isn't getting paid and he doesn't deserve most of this criticism. But it's quite obvious to everyone following the program that he's struggling. Gene should sit him at DH for a few games and let him work out the kinks on the practice field. We're all rooting for him to succeed, not to fail. Well, at least 98% of us are anyway.

Well Tyler has to start somewhere. Maybe last night where he miade both the spectacular and the routine plays will be the start of better things for Tyler. Of course, he needs to follow up and build on that.

But with this team it seems like if it isn't one thing plaguing us its something else and it's impossible to predict what that next thing will be. I suppose that's a classic definition of inconsistency.

1988 Lansing 28. 1996 Blake 22. 1995 Blake 21. All time record held by a couple at 34 in early 1980s, but we played more games then.
