  • The MSSBC (Missouri State Sun Belt Conference) Bears once again were sodomized on a Saturday afternoon. This time it was 38-2 by Illinois State. And it wasn't even that close.

The nice thing about following the Bears is that I've discovered this whole new level of football. They call it FCS. On the surface, you'd think is boring, lacking quality and uninteresting. Well, you'd be right. On the other hand, it is rather fun to focus on one team and check the box score every Sunday, just to see how badly they did the day before.
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

You still don't get it?! All of this sucking means they have the right guy to get them a spot in an FBS conference. @LuskingforGuttin: has made that perfectly clear. They are really bad. They sold out one game (almost) each of the past two seasons. They are going to continue to suck. Their fan attendance is 70% of FBS requirements and their stadium is teeny tiny. BUT DAMMIT THEY HAVE THE RIGHT GUY!! THAT'S what matters. The right guy! He isn't turning them around or able to take advantage of the momentum of their stadium renovation to garner some wins, but gosh he is going to win the hearts and minds of Missouri folks across the state I tell ya!

A pay cut? He must have been their women's basketball coach prior to this.

I will say this to that... I enjoy FCS football a little bit. It may be mostly irrelevant, but it is also fun to turn on ESPN3 from time to time and catch a MVC game. They are generally available, and it's not bad football (outside of MoST). For example, last weekend, I was able to watch NDSU and USD play.

It's kinda fun for me knowing that the MVFC happens to produce some of the best FCS out there. If I'm not mistaken, 8 out of the 10 MVFC teams are in the FCS top 25 or receiving votes. You guessed it, MoST is not one of them :)...and somehow they are the one who thinks they need to level up. Figure that out.

            • I still can't believe that we only sold 15,000+ tickets for the IBA game 2 months before tip off. If we were big time, we could have sold 18k.

Where would those extra 3k sit?

In Springfield. There are tons of open seats there.

No he was the DC for Missouri. Reports said he made $600,000 at Mozzou and took the MOST job for $270,000

You guys see it as a pay cut, I see it as a clever tax dodge.

                      • You guys need to back off. Clearly, the prestige of being the Head Football Coach at Missouri State football is worth far more than the $330,000 a year in salary. Like everyone else associated with Missouri State Coach Steckel is at a level of intelligence that us mere mortals simply can't comprehend (and probably would not want to).

I've got a bad feeling about this game. I think south Dakota is better than expected and we are much worse.

Is it possible we go winless in D1 this year? I hope not.

Guys, it's not complicated. The man was well compensated at Mizzou and is still well compensated now at Missouri State. He wanted to be a head coach and was getting up there in age. If you look around college football right now you will see that it is harder for quality defensive coordinators to get head coaching jobs than it is for good offensive assistants. Stec was a finalist for the Texas State job the last time it went open but it ultimately went to Coach Fran. It was approaching now or never time for him to be a HC at the D1 level. He loves the state of Missouri and so it made a lot of sense for both sides.

I can't guarantee that he will turn things around but he was a huge hire. He has a great personality. You won't find anyone in the state of Missouri at any level of football (HS, college, NFL) that has a bad thing to say about the man. He is beloved here. The KC Star and St. Louis Post-Dispatch have written more articles about MSU football in the past year than they have in the previous ten combined. The dude is basically a Marine version of Barry Hinson with more of an edge and a better resume.

He may fail here because his coaching staff is just so-so. He also seems to not want to build this program with transfers which I think is a legitimate method and would make things much easier. Thirdly, his defense relies a ton on having great defensive lineman that overrun an o-line. If he doesn't get supremely talented guys at that spot then he might not be able to adjust.

However things end up, the man doesn't deserve to be mocked for taking the Missouri State job. He had a nice spot in Columbia and could have rode it out there, but he took a chance at his ultimate dream. If anyone poster on this board did a similar thing I would absolutely applaud them and certainly not ridicule them.
