Or if you're Missouri State, sell the bees to pay for locker rooms.

Here's an interesting idea that could really shake things up. Maybe someday, early declarers who only crack the D-league will be allowed to return to college...I'm not sure what I think yet. I don't hate it.

Probably needs it's own thread, but oh well...

I think that is already is motion. It would help the college game out, because more great players would come back. But as always, the NBA needs to be rid of the one-year-removed rule.

        New thread needed*

Like baseball; If you don't get drafted high enough, or even don't like who your drafted by, you can return/go to school.

He's being sarcastic to make a point, but I found this quote very interesting:

            Myron Medcalf@MedcalfByESPN

"Let's just change everything. Coaches sit out a year before they can coach at their new schools. Oh, and players can restrict their options."

It got me to thinking...Coaches can jump at offers to better their careers all the time, and it often leaves players who were sold a bill of goods behind. Players don't get to transfer without penalty because of all the reasons we always hear, but coaches can transfer all over the place with a big pay raise and no penalty. Interesting.

I don't understand the consternation and comparison between what coaches and players are allowed to do.

Coaches are employees, working under a contract, for an entity that is footing the cost (and risk) of providing a platform for players to showcase and improve their skills while being provided, free of charge, an education with a current market value and future earnings potential.

              Both are completely voluntary.

My question would be then why are players bound by anything? It makes more sense to me for the person who is being paid something to have restrictions placed on them. It goes back to the whole debate over what it even means anymore to be a "student athlete." You are right, but I kind of think the only people who care about transfer restrictions are caring about it from a competitive standpoint, not an education and scholarship standpoint. I think a lot of times, players choose a school based on the coach or the name, not the education. If it was the other way around, I don't think a player would care as much about their coach leaving. After all, they were there for the education anyway and the sport was just a bonus to have some fun while getting school paid for.... :) like that ever happens...

Restrictions could be placed in the contract, but that's not going to fly in the current coaching market. That could change someday, but not likely. The NCAA could conceivably add those restrictions as a condition of participation, but from a business standpoint probably won't.

Another way to look at players sitting out is that it gives them extra time to complete their degree. They are actually getting five years worth of education (more current market value) instead of four. Of course, I would expect less than 20% of D1 basketball players (and that might be generous) have any intention on putting whatever degree they receive to use.

Yeah, how did that degree from the "Harvard of Nebraska" work out for Kevin Ross?

Didn't Gibbs start at Texas before moving to the Hall?

That seems like an odd decision. Was there tension between Gibbs and Whitehead this year?

I'm really glad to see Thurman at Newman. We'll get to see him in action again next year in the inevitable exhibition, I presume. I think this was a good choice for him. He will finish his career having fun and doing well as a starter, while finishing his degree in his home town. I can't imagine how awful it must be to play for Misery State, and he was able to escape :)

Newman just became a very interesting hometown team with some solid talent.

                                Do we play them again?

They should destroy D2 if they can get the best out of Love and Thurman.
