I've had similar thoughs in general ever since I looked up Grant's career before Alabama. I have a feeling Gregg Marshall's decision will prove very wise in the end.

These big schools buy the latest coaching commodity because it looks "good enough" to their fans. Texas knows the fans won't think Shaka is a bad idea. They will eat it up, and if it doesn't work out, the AD still looks like he made the best call possible. Meanwhile, Shaka winds up looking like Anthony Grant in 4-5 years.

... And HCGM is still dominating.

I am still trying to figure out why Texas got rid of Rick Barnes to hire Shaka. Shaka Smart is intelligent and a good coach but the man has never won his conference. His first year as a coach at VCU he won the CBI (2010) which was followed by a impressive Final 4 trip (2011) but has then exited the Dance twice in the Round of 32 (2012, 2013) and twice (2014, 2015) in the Round of 64. Still a 74.4% winning percentage is impressive.

It's like they really just want newness. They are tired of Barnes, just like Bama got tired of Grant. This whole thing might really backfire for Shaka. On the ther hand, Grant will land at a mid major and immediately start winning again. Barnes will make Tennessee strong with whatever gas he has left in the tank and HCGM will keep winning in the MVC.

Shaka actually takes on quite a risk here. I'd say he is the MOST likely to underachieve in this whole situation. Gregg is going to look at Shaka in three years and be very glad he stayed here.

He's certainly going to get paid sufficiently well to take the risk though, so at least he has that. The pressure from the Texas boosters has to take a whole 'nother kind of coach. A politically savvy coach. Very politically savvy. Either that or with an ego bigger than the boosters. Maybe Shaka is that guy, maybe he isn't. I can't imagine there are many of them.

Florida Gators coach Billy Donovan, who has a $500,000 buyout, is looking at making the jump to the NBA this offseason, league sources told ESPN.

No doubt he can coach. Great coach, shady person. Between him and Calipari it's hard to say who is shadier

There will be no in between with that hire. Either brilliant or bust.

Pawl says it's a great hire. The comments are gold.
One quick note before we present the rankings: With Wichita State’s move to the American Athletic Conference, the Shockers have moved out of the mid-major club. We wish the Shockers well against Cincinnati, UConn, SMU, and more.
