  • KU fans meltdown after loss to Rice.

    I've heard everything from:

    1. It's still all Turner Gill's fault
    2. Charlie Weis can't call plays
    3. Who convinced the KU AD that Weis could save KU football?
    4. Cancel KU football, build a new stadium, start over from scratch
    5. It's not the KU QB's fault this year
    6. It could still all be "OK" later down the line

After hearing all of that since last night, I do think KU will have an issue if Charlie Weis doesn't pan out. From what I hear, their football stadium was supposed to get expanded and refurbished years ago, but with all the coaching fiasco's they've been having, those plans got put on hold. If you're the AD and worst comes to worst, I think you have no choice but to leave Weis as the coach and be terrible, while you make stadium improvements... There's just something about this subject that makes me think KU football has much bigger problems than just coaching. One is, they have no football culture up there. This is the subject that KU, nor their fans want to discuss. Their football stadium, it's the oldest college football stadium West of the Mississippi, should of been torn down instead of refurbished. It's kind of weird listening to the average KU fan complain about their outdated football stadium, the track, oh and the fact their football team is possibly the worst team in the nation, while all their high paid coaches that were brought in because of name, reputation or just out of plain stupidity stand around looking confused... The outlook for them is so bad that their own fans make fun of their own football team. The strange part is, I can't tell if it's out of concern for KU, or if maybe they do think KU football just needs shut down because it is truly lacking and is pointless. Only time will tell. And their AD will have some big decisions to make.

The solution is as s simple as basketball practice begins in about three weeks.

KU started out the 2009 football season 5-0 and got to #17 in the AP poll. Since then, the Jayhawks are 7-38 with three of those wins coming against FCS opponents (and for accuracy's sake, one loss was also to an FCS opponent). Wow! What a train wreck!

I wonder how they'd do against Butler County.

Apart from the start of basketball season to console them, the other thing KU fans need to keep in mind is that in football, they're "at this level," in the immortal words of a former Shocker basketball coach. They may be in a top five conference, but they're at best a stepping stone unless the right someone consciously chooses to make them his destination, the way Bill Snyder did with Manhattan.

The dozens of Chickenhawk football fans need (and their athletic department needs) to dispense with any delusions of grandeur, and unless Weis gets things on the right track in a few years -- and if they have any sense, they'll realize it's going to take a few, not just one or two -- to look to some fallen angel like Bobby Petrino or Terry Bowden, or some hotshot assistant, preferably one of the offensive whizbangs who can at least make them entertaining while they try to build, and recognize that once he gets the job done he's probably going to move on to an actual football job at a school that has an actual football tradition.

If Weis remains the coach during these "rebuilding years", there's no way he doesn't became a tad insecure. If KU football is just terrible and he remains the coach for the next 3 seasons, it's because the AD is shifting his attention to giving their football stadium getting a badly needed face lift and expanding it some how. That would be the first of at least somewhat cleaning up their football mess. As far as their football tradition goes, even during those magical seasons they had, their stadium was only half full after half time. I'm not sure exactly how you build a football tradition up there. The reason KU nor their fans want to talk about it is because it embarks the sensitive subject of "Has Lawrence lost it's college town attitude some what over the years?"
It's no secret around the state either, it's just something KU of course doesn't make a big deal about. Whatever level the school and their fans believe they are at college sports, if you're attending a football or baseball game at KU get ready for a huge let down, even if the play on the field is good. I've also noticed over the years, that if KU baseball is ranked, their fans in the area seemingly flock to Eck Stadium to watch them play WSU. Go to Lawrence to watch the return game, you will be sitting with about 20 WSU fans and notice a few KU fans merely passing by to see whats going on in their baseball stadium and then exiting shortly after.. I guess one could argue that their most devoted fans spend all their money during basketball season, but even then, where are all their students during football and baseball?

You seem to know a lot about KU sports for a "bleed yellow" Shocker fan ...

Do you live in Kansas, 85? The last I checked, I've heard Gregg Marshall take jabs at how bad KU football is during football season, so am I really in the wrong here? I am a WSU fan, i've gone to wsu baseball games in Wichita and in Lawrence.. I dunno, your comment questioning rather or not i'm a WSU fan is just a reminder why wheatshockers.com got started. Considering this thread is in the "Around NCAA" board, I don't know what your concern is.

I'd like to see an old WSU coach, Phil Fulmer coach at KU when Weis gets fired.

I think Bill Parcells could get the job done up there too.

Maybe they will replace Charlie with Bo Pelini. Sounds like he may be available next year. Mac Brown is also likely to be available.

I feel sorry for KU fans a little bit. After their Orange Bowl season (which was a year they didn't have to play OU and Texas might I add), they were riding high as KSU was on the decline. Now, they have gone from BCS bowl victors to one of the worst programs in the nation. They should have not shown Mangino the door and should have used all that basketball and BCS money toward building a new stadium. Hell, Nick Sabin couldn't coach this years team to three wins. I'm glad KSU is back on top.
