Because I would think, based on resume and ability, Gregg Marshall would have been a much better option than Pope. And if Kentucky didn't even make contact, that kind of tells you how cooked Marshall is in the coaching landscape. Because if any school has the firepower to do a PR rehabilitation on a coach, it's Kentucky.
I've said for quite some time now and I still stand by it, Marshall hasn't been interested in getting back into coaching. If he hadn't been removed, I'd be expecting him to retire soon, if he hadn't already. Part of me thinks the NIL would make him disinterested, but on the flip side, if he were still coaching I think our NIL would be in a much, much healthier place.

But back to the point, I think he had retirement in sight and even though the choice was made for him, I think he was done regardless of who reached out.

I think Marshall may be done coaching. I wouldn't know of his thoughts, especially with NIL. But I think it's an interesting proposition.

In my brief google search on the topic of Gregg Marshall and coaching vacancies, I ran across this blurb on a Clemson message board (from 2017).

Clemson would not be able to pay him as much

as Wichita St. The only schools who would be able to pay him more are the real big boys, like Kentucky.

Wichita St. is also a better job...Clemson would be a demotion.

I honestly could see Marshall being some sort of talent scout. No one is better at evaluating players plus he doesn’t have to put up with all of the portal and NIL garbage.

                            • Not sure if it’s that there’s so much money to be made as a HC most anywhere that there isn’t the overwhelming urge to jump up to a “Blue Blood” no matter what like there was back in the day. Do ridiculous expectations for not that much more money (relatively speaking) make these HC position less desirable? Especially considering that we’re in a NIL era where historical traditions pretty much has no pull in recruiting.
It’s interesting to me that UNC, Duke, Villanova, Arizona & Kentucky have all been “open” within the last 3-4 years and really haven’t sent shockwaves to the coaching carousel. I mean we had more ripples effects from SMU making a change than any of four schools above combined.

If you're not going to go all the way, why go?

I am very interested to see what happens in Larryville when The Rug hangs up his whistle. I don’t think there’s an obvious heir apparent.
