Rick Reilly not pulling any punches with that article. Hagiography indeed. However, I would submit that hagiography is pretty common at most big-time college football programs and that is as much on the fans as it is on anything the media does. Maybe mostly on the fans.

But JoePa was a whole other level of it. The guy had been there since the founding of this country.

When the wins go down, interest goes down, attendance goes down, and revenue drops. The potential for future revenue is significantly lower and I would imagine that over the next decade lost anticipated revenue figures will dwarf the 60mil penalty.

And this is just the NCAA part of the picture.
PSU will probably raise $268M in 2012-13 and not even notice the $60M.

"Soebbing said he did not know how long it will take for Penn State to fully
recover its losses, but a resilient alumni base, which raised more than $208
million for the university during the 2011-12 school year, may ensure a speedy
        comeback."

"Thousands of Penn State faithful woke up early and gathered at Penn State’s workout Tuesday morning.

Starting at about 6 a.m., “We are” chants rang throughout the morning air as the “Rise and Rally” event showed Penn State fans still support their team after it was hit with heavy NCAA sanctions last week. Fans lined the sidelines and got a chance to see the Nittany Lions run some drills after they greeted the team with rousing applause as players showed up at the Lasch Football Building for a 7 a.m. workout."

Support the players all day every day. Support the school, I will not.

So apparently "players" aren't part of your definition of "school". What groups of people are?

I sympathize the players, those who don a penn st jersey. However, the institution they attend, the school, if you will, is deserving of nothing but shame.

If they and others continue to rally around JoePa and feel they've been slighted in some way, yes.

Disagree. JoePa hasn't had his day in court.

And yet the more info that comes out, the worse he looks. Even the Freeh report threw him under the bus for keeping silent and even convincing the others not to report anything. Why do you think PSU took the statue down? Because when that info came out it was impossible to defend the guy. That's also why they vacated wins from 1998 thru last season. Because JoePa was guilty of keeping it all quite and pretending it didn't happen. If it was JUST the Sandusky part and JoePa wasn't involved in the cover up, PSU would have kept those wins, but that part was put into the penalties to hurt JoePa and keep a disgusting individual like him out of the record books.

Except that the Freeh report didn't show that he convinced anyone to cover anything up, it just assumes that he did so without having any evidence about what took place. We don't know what was said in that meeting. It could have equally been a case of an administrator meeting with Joe, seeing how much the whole situation tore him up, and independently deciding to try to bury it to spare Joe, without Joe ever asking him to do so. What was said in the Freeh report wouldn't even begin to hold up in a court of law.

Taking the statue down and stripping the wins has nothing to do with there being solid proof of Joe Pa's complicity, but rather proof that in the media circus that follows a tragedy like this one, the concept of innocent until proven guilty is overthrown by the mob's desire to lynch somebody and the more prominent you are, the more you are the target of the lynch mob. Is it possible that Joe Pa is guilty? Yes. But at this point, there has been a lot more assumption and speculation against him than actual evidence. What actual evidence there is is that he did what he was supposed to do in reporting what he knew to administrators.

This is a good discussion worth more than I can commit on my stupid iPhone at the moment. I'll respond in kind tomorrow.

No you said "school" and "institution". I'm trying to figure out who, in your mind, that includes and who it excludes.

When I hear "school" I think of students, faculty, staff, administration and trustees. Do you hold the students in contempt? The English department? The lawn maintenance crew? The Medical School? You want to shame the entire institution, but who exactly?
