  • Penn St- gets hammered by NCAA!

    http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/ncaaf-dr-saturday/ncaa-announces-penalties-penn-state-including-four-bowl-131754169--ncaaf.html
    • Four year postseason ban
    • 10 initial scholarship losses and 20 per year for four years
    • $60 million fine
    • All wins from 1998-2011 vacated
    • Five year probationary period
I have come here to chew bubblegum and kickass ... and I'm all out of bubblegum.

I'm not sure I'd call that enough. No wonder the word was PSU wasn't going to challenge it.

Four year postseason bad - Not harsh enough
10 and 20 - Not bad, but should be longer
$60 mil. - Sounds good, but what kind of money does PSU make off of football?
Vacated wins - Easy to do and doesn't really mean much except to the Patino family
Five year probation - Should be longer.

I don't know all of what SMU got, but would like to see the comps. I know they were shut down for one year and not allowed to play home games the next. I would have liked to seen PSU have a home game ban of some kind. While this is more than a slap on the wrist, I don't think it's harsh enough.

They make around 60 million per year.

I would have liked to of seen more penalties, I'm not sure I could have seen enough penalties...but this is pretty severe.

          Wow. Wow. Wow.

Note: According to the release, the 60m amt was equal to one year of football income.

I doubt that any financial fine or NCAA enforceable sanction could 'solve' the damage done to the victims of these crimes, but this line of action is pretty heavy and feels about right in my book.

This pretty much reboots the entire PSU football program and indelibly stamps the program with the crimes those responsible committed. I think that was the goal, and I suggest that was accomplished with these measures.

Beyond football, PSU has a long history of strongly supporting a wide portfolio of NCAA sports. Many of those sports were almost entirely subsidized by revenue generated by the football program. It will be interesting to see how this plays out in the next few years. While perhaps it isn't the official 'death penalty' it is a heavy blow to the organization. If PSU is to ever recover from these sanctions, it will be on a ruined reputation - and that ain't easy.

I just checked. Bobby Bowden's wikipedia page has already been updated.

Congrats to Coach Bowden and FSU, I guess?

I'd kind of like to hear what people think the penalties should have been.....I have my own ideas for later.

                Then it's definitely not enough.

Keep this in mind, that was the annual revenue in years prior to the scandal and these sanctions. The NCAA penalties (which include player transfer opportunities and 20 few scholarships) will likely push PSU into the basement of the Big-10 and certainly removes them from post-season play. When the wins go down, interest goes down, attendance goes down, and revenue drops. The potential for future revenue is significantly lower and I would imagine that over the next decade lost anticipated revenue figures will dwarf the 60mil penalty.

And this is just the NCAA part of the picture.

I'd have liked to seen something along the lines of:

Shut the program down for 1 or 2 years.
No home games for a couple of years once started back up.
They still have to pay any OOC paydays they had scheduled. If they have some scheduled for after football is brought back, they pay those teams and move the game to the opponents place.
Scholarship cuts to FCS level (63?) for 5 years upon the return of football. They can add 5 or so to that every year after until back to max.
Post season football ban for 10 years upon return of football.
                    Probation for 20.
Any violation of these, or other major infractions, during the probation period will result in hefty fine, (I don't have a number) and the Death Penalty for at least 2 more years and as many as 5. Then start all over again.
Limit the number of assistants. I believe they're allowed 10, lets say they get 5 or 6 for five years.
No football camps for minors for 5-10 years.
Recruiting restrictions. Perhaps no off campus recruiting contact for 3 years after football is returned. Then limit the number of visits
Vacate wins from 1998-2011. (Hurts the Paterno family and crazy fans who think he's bigger than everything)

That's at least a start for me...

Penn State has released a statement of some kind. I haven't seen it. I guess it was a presser of some kind. Video doesn't do me much good at work.

Big 10 is supposed to be releasing something now.

I don't know what a "fair" penalty would be. That's a very difficult concept to quantify. But from what I'm hearing, the NCAA is making it easy for current PSU players to transfer, meaning the competitive level of their program is going to drop fast and hard. I think it's going to be much longer than 4-5 years before they recover. It's going to take awhile before their reputation improves enough to recruit top talent.

I don't know if they have it in the bank, but $60 million is not going to be one year's worth of revenue anymore. More likely to be 2-3 years, I would guess. And, the $60 million is supposedly going to benefit the survivors of sexual abuse; so that's a positive.

I'm hoping they don't cut 10-20 scholarships in the minor sports to compensate. Maybe the NCAA stipulated that, I don't know.

I think only time will tell if the punishment was adequate.

I don't profess to know any answers, but I do have a question or 2.

What happens to the $60 million they pay to the NCAA?

I am interested in the Big10s response....I am not sure Penn State hasn't always been looked down upon by other members of the conference...I am curious what else they can do to punish the program.

Like @Kung Wu:, I too am slightly troubled by the punishment levied to the kids at PSU not involved in this crime. I also don't think the fine is anywhere near large enough. 1 year revenue???? This went on for a dozen or more years.

How about 12 years of revenue? Hit 'em where it hurts. And the money goes to charity and scholarships not associated with PSU or the Big10. Let's not forget, the Big 10 makes a ton off Penn State today and did for all those years.

I don't think anyone currently on scholarship should lose that, nor should the coaches be allowed to push them out. After they leave, then reduce the available scholarships. Current kids can transfer at any time, with no waiting period.

All Big10 money received due to PSU is donated to charity. The member institutions don't get to profit more because of this.

Just a few ideas off the top of my head.

I believe I heard the $60 million is going into a fun the NCAA is setting up for Child Abuse/Sexual Assault victims/organizations. I also believe that the Big 10 has dictated that PSU's ABC/ESPN money as well as their share of bowl revenue are to go into the same fund for the next 5 years or so.
