Unlikely to be an unsubstantiated rumor when it is a direct quote from the long-time voice of the Hoosiers.

Perhaps the rumor part is the innuendo about the brain not working which has a clear implication to anyone that has had to deal with loved ones who go through that. It is really hard to watch.
