Some quotes from Ron Paul towards both the left and the right about the NYC Mosque controversy.

Is the controversy over building a mosque near ground zero a grand distraction or a grand opportunity? Or is it, once again, grandiose demagoguery?

It has been said, “Nero fiddled while Rome burned.” Are we not overly preoccupied with this controversy, now being used in various ways by grandstanding politicians? It looks to me like the politicians are “fiddling while the economy burns.”
...The fact that so much attention has been given the mosque debate, raises the question of just why and driven by whom?

In my opinion it has come from the neo-conservatives who demand continual war in the Middle East and Central Asia and are compelled to constantly justify it.

They never miss a chance to use hatred toward Muslims to rally support for the ill conceived preventative wars...
Conservatives are once again, unfortunately, failing to defend private property rights, a policy we claim to cherish. In addition conservatives missed a chance to challenge the hypocrisy of the left which now claims they defend property rights of Muslims, yet rarely if ever, the property rights of American private businesses.
The House Speaker is now treading on a slippery slope by demanding a Congressional investigation to find out just who is funding the mosque—a bold rejection of property rights, 1st Amendment rights, and the Rule of Law—in order to look tough against Islam.

This is all about hate and Islamaphobia.

We now have an epidemic of “sunshine patriots” on both the right and the left who are all for freedom, as long as there’s no controversy and nobody is offended.

Political demagoguery rules when truth and liberty are ignored.
    Typical.

Thanks 1979. I think Paul is absolutely right. (A shock, I know.)

I don't see how a conservative/Constitutionalist can, on legal grounds, be against the building of the mosque. It is a property rights issue and those petitioning the government to stop it are either hypocrites or not true conservatives.

I do think the mosque builders are misguided and missing the big pictures. What they are doing is tasteless and offensive. They are the ones people should be petitioning, as I'm sure some are.

Putting up with this type of thing is part of the cost of living in a mostly free society with constitutionally guaranteed religious freedom.

I don't like what they are doing any more than anyone else and am offended by their arrogance. But I don't have to like it and I don't have a right not to be offended.

        So you're against the mosque?

You are the type that Ron Paul and others are pouncing on. No one is seriously raising the issue on legal grounds, but this is how those against the mosque are being characterized.

Paul is railing against the politicians. I admit I have yet to read an in-depth article and only seen/read snippets here and there. Are you implying that no one is upset with local government about this? I thought I heard early on that people were upset with NYC for not blocking this.

I support their right to build the mosque wherever the law allows them to.

I can support their right, but disagree with their choice.

I also do not think DC politicians should be making an issue one way or another. It's the business of the city of New York and its citizens. The District of Corruption pols have enough concerns of their own. They can have an opinion, but putting it into the public arena isn't necessary.

I suppose I may have misunderstood. If Paul really is saying that no one should disagree with their CHOICE to put it there, then I would have to disagree with him on that point. But Paul very rarely criticizes citizens for speaking their minds. He does criticize the power structure and elites when it appears they are behind something.

So get this...now the Imam says that if he would have known that building the Mosque near ground zero was going to cause such a ruckous...he wouldn't have built it there. If that's not ridiculous enough, he goes on. Next he says with some resignation (faked, no doubt) that now they must push forward for fear that if they stopped the project or moved it somewhere else that would create a national security risk for the United States.

Saudi Prince Backs Moving Planned NYC Mosque

Prince Alwaleed urged the backers of the proposed Islamic center not to "agitate the wound by saying, 'We need to put the mosque next to the 9/11 site."

"Those people behind the mosque have to respect, have to appreciate and have to defer to the people of New York," the prince was quoted as saying by the magazine, which said the full interview will be published Sunday. "The wound is still there. Just because the wound is healing you can't say, 'Let's just go back to where we were pre-9/11."
