SEOUL, Aug. 24 (Yonhap) -- North Korea has deployed amphibious landing crafts carrying special forces to the frontline as the country keeps up its tight combat readiness despite on-going inter-Korean talks to defuse military tension, military sources said Monday.

About 10 North Korean air-cushioned landing crafts have left their home base in Cholsan, North Pyongan Province, and come forward to a naval base, located about 60 kilometers north of the Northern Limit Line, the de facto inter-Korean border in the Yellow Sea, the sources said.

"Since North Korea declared a semi-war state, its invasion vehicles and forces have been actively moving," one of the sources said.

after a 34 hour marathon parlay - NK went from we will make "SK a sea of fire" to "we regret the mine attack and will cease provocations". SK will shut off the propaganda speakers today and both sides have said they will work together for a greater Korea.

You can't make this kind of theater up in the "land of the morning calm".

SK - crisis adverted - whew!

NORKS: We kill their soldiers and say "we regret" (not killing many more) and they give us money and tourism - IDIOTS!!

This is where this situation was interesting for me. North Korea basically told China to shove it when China told them to calm down. China decided to move an entire invasion force onto North Korea's doorstep to point out how quickly they could destroy them.

The China/North Korea "alliance" keeps dying more and more. I'm still putting money on China organizing/supporting some of North Korea's military leadership in a coup, eventually. Make the north into a puppet state, invite South Korean investment/tourism, and use the eventual possibility of reunification to force us out of the South.

NORKS are back at it. They are supposebly considering bracketing Guam with 4 Hwason-12 missiles. What could go wrong. From KGS

The clarification is important. For one thing, it constitutes a notice to mariners, aircraft and to Japan that North Korea intends to launch missiles over Japan into the Pacific so as to bracket Guam sometime after mid-August. That is a normal requirement of international law. It means that Guam is in a North Korean closure area.

The language of the clarification is different. The mood of the key verbs is indicative, not subjunctive or conditional. The voice is active and the tense is future. The description of the Hwasong rocket salvo follows the format, content and precision of North Korean descriptions of their ballistic missile launches on 4 and 28 July.

Those precedents and the details in the clarification establish a prima facie case that the Strategic Force judges that it can execute a salvo launch that brackets Guam.

In this clarification, General Kim is probably expressing the views of the General Staff when he said that only absolute force will work on the US President. The position of the General Staff seems to favor executing the bracketing salvo.

The order to do so has not yet been given. North Korea is watching US words and actions that back up the words. We see no signs in North Korean behavior or language that the statement by the US President has increased the likelihood of a war. North Koreans expect to engage in a war of words. It is a form of combat.

NightWatch special comment. Several issues are noteworthy. Under Kim Jong Un, one characteristic of the ballistic missile and nuclear programs is that the North Koreans have done what they said they would do, except for the nuclear detonation in April 2017.

In January, North Korean media announced that North Korea will launch an intercontinental ballistic missile in 2017. To quote Dr. Bruce Bechtol at San Angelo State University, “They did what they said they would do.”

The inference is, if they say they can bracket Guam with four missiles, they can do it, if ordered.

A second issue is their view that the US President only responds to force. If that is the consensus judgement of the leadership, North Korea will execute the rocket bracket salvo to persuade the US President that their capabilities are genuine and their threats are not idle.

A third and related issue is the precedent of Kim Jong Un ordering risky, provocative physical action, such as limited attacks on South Korean forces. We conducted a brief review.

The North Korean sinking of the South Korean patrol ship Cheonan in 2010 is attributed to Kim Jong Un’s direction. Likewise, in November 2010 and in 2014 Kim reportedly ordered the shelling of the South Korean islands along the Northern Limit Line off the northwest coast of South Korea.

Kim personally gave the orders or pressed the buttons for the nuclear tests and for ballistic missile launches in 2016 and 2017, in defiance of significant international pressure. We know Kim wants to be seen as a strong and daring commander and prefers to take high risk, provocative action, even over the advice of some senior advisors.

On the other hand, we know of two incidents in which Kim Jong Un did not take physical action, but wanted to.

The Chinese came out and bluntly warned the NORKS that if they attack the U.S.they will not defend them. They also warned the U.S. that they would not stand for a preemptive strike on NK.
This seemed to lead to quiet weekend and has been fairly quiet on the rhetoric front.

Three open source missile experts (one from MIT, 2 from Germany) have judged that NORKS missle technology is not yet good enough to attack the mainland 48, but could hit Alaska with no payload. Guam would be easily reachable.

The Dear Leader said yesterday that he had reviewed the plans but was going to reframe from launching any missiles at Guam. The NORKS got what they wanted - worlds attention.

“He (Kim) said that the US imperialists caught the noose around their necks due to their reckless military confrontation racket, adding that he would watch a little more the foolish and stupid conduct of the Yankees spending a hard time of every minute of their miserable lot. “

“He said that he wants to advise the US, which is driving the situation on the Korean peninsula into the touch-and-go situation, running helter-skelter, to take into full account gains and losses with clear head whether the prevailing situation is more unfavorable for any party.”

“In order to defuse the tensions and prevent the dangerous military conflict on the Korean peninsula, it is necessary for the US to make a proper option (choice) first and show it through action, as it committed provocations after introducing huge nuclear strategic equipment into the vicinity of the peninsula, he said, adding that the US should stop at once arrogant provocations against the DPRK and unilateral demands and not provoke it any longer.”

“He said that if the Yankees persist in their extremely dangerous reckless actions on the Korean peninsula and in its vicinity, testing the self-restraint of the DPRK, the latter will make an important decision as it already declared, warning the US that it should think reasonably and judge properly not to suffer shame that it is hit by the DPRK again.”

He said that if the planned fire of power demonstration (i.e., the salvo launches to bracket Guam) is carried out as the US is going more reckless, it will be the most delightful historic moment when the Hwasong artillerymen will wring the windpipes of the Yankees and point daggers at their necks, underlining the need to be always ready for launching to go into action anytime once our Party decides…”

With the world abuzz about Trump accepting the NK-USA summit, all of sudden NK has went dark. As of yesterday, Secretary of State had confirmed that NK has not responded to the U.S. acceptance. There is speculation that this delay may because they were caught by surprise by the U.S. quick acceptance.

It does look like the US - NK summit will occur. It will be interesting to see if any baby steps are made for ending the war on the Korean peninsula.

... Or -ahem- grant them access to the US financial and commercial market, while still under sanctions. But keep it hidden, of course...

Surely, he's not that stupid? A move that dumb could easily cost someone an election.

i wouldn’t expect anything concrete from this first meeting. Iit was reported today that NK wants to have multiple summits.

Practically guaranteed to be the outcome. And only if Kim isn't blowing smoke.

Details are starting to trickle out.

                            1. Trump to has agreed to end military exercises with SK (this seems to be talking about strategic air assets - probably more details to come). This seems to have caught SK and the pentagon by surprise.

                            2. Reaffirm the Sk-NK declarization earlier this year to denuclearized the peninsula. This is what SK wanted.

                            3. Pow status and return

                            4. Eventual security guarantees

                            5. Follow-on negotiations to implement agreements.

Seems like a homerun for the first meeting. Not sure it could have gone any better? The only thing it appears we gave up were suspending the joint war games with SK. That is similar to a joint fire exercise between NYC and Mulvane, KS to battle skyscraper fires. Sure it's a joint exercise, but if it really ever hit the fan it would be US taking the lead.
