    • Check out the big brain on Burris:

CNSNews.com: “Federally, if you look at it from a federal standpoint, what area specifically of the Constitution would give Congress the power to mandate an individual to have health insurance?”

Senator Burris: “Well, that’s under certainly the laws of the--protect the health, welfare of the country. That’s under the Constitution. We’re not even dealing with any constitutionality here. Should we move in that direction? What does the Constitution say? To provide for the health, welfare and the defense of the country.”

On August 18, several media figures -- including MSNBC host Dr. Nancy Snyderman, Fox Business Network host Connell McShane, and NBC correspondent Savannah Guthrie -- reported that 60,000 senior citizens have canceled their AARP membership since July 1 because of the organization's support for health care reform. But those media figures did not note that the Associated Press reported the previous day that, according to an AARP spokesman, the organization regularly loses 300,000 members a month and has gained 400,000 new members in the same period.
Never let the truth get in the way of a conservatives fantasy! Hmm, I think I'll join AARP today. 8)

          • AARP raises its voice in health care debate

Since July 1, many of the 60,000 AARP members who have quit over concerns about health care legislation said they were worried it could lead to cuts in Medicare. Although AARP has not endorsed any specific plan, its general support for a system change left many members with the impression it backs the Democrats' bill.

The resignations surprised leaders of the 40-million-member lobbying group, even though it signed up 400,000 new members during the same period.

"The last thing I want is for members to feel we're not representing them," says Lori Parham, AARP's Florida director.
Thousands Quit AARP Over Health Reform

CBS News has learned that up to 60,000 people have cancelled their AARP memberships since July 1, angered over the group's position on health care.

Elaine Guardiani has been with AARP for 14 years, and said, "I'm extremely disappointed in AARP."

Retired nurse Dale Anderson has 12 years with AARP and said, "I don't wanna be connected with AARP."

Many are switching to the American Seniors Association, a group that calls itself the conservative alternative as CBS News Investigative Correspondent Sharyl Attkisson reports.

            ***

Meantime, the AARP's image suffered with this town meeting already seen by hundreds of thousands on YouTube.

Faced with skeptical questions from the audience, the AARP representative ends the meeting abruptly. When the discussion continues, she pulls the plug on the microphone.

AARP says for a group with 40 million members that adds hundreds of thousands each month, losing 60 thousand is just a drop in the bucket. But to the much smaller American Seniors Association it's a flood.
AARP Members Leaving Over Health Reform

As many as 60,000 AARP members have left the group in protest over its stance on healthcare reform, CBS News reported on August 17.

Advertising financed by AARP has supported President Obama’s reform efforts, and the president himself said at a recent town hall meeting in Portsmouth, New Hampshire: “We have the AARP on board because they know this is a good deal for our seniors.” These things didn’t sit well with the many AARP members who are upset over proposed cuts to Medicare that will total $313 billion over ten years.

“I'm extremely disappointed in AARP,” declared Elaine Guardiani, a 14-year AARP veteran. Retired nurse Dale Anderson was with AARP for 12 years but now says, “I don't wanna be connected with AARP.” These feelings were echoed by other members who attended an August 4 town hall meeting sponsored by AARP. A YouTube video of the meeting shows how much frustration AARP members are experiencing with the group.

            • Majority leader: House will pass health bill

By ERICA WERNER and RICARDO ALONSO-ZALDIVAR (AP)

WASHINGTON — The second-ranking House Democrat predicted that historic health care legislation will be passed Saturday as the AARP, the nation's premier lobbying group for the elderly, announced it was signing on to the bill.

Rep. Steny Hoyer said House leaders expect to have the 218 votes needed to pass the sweeping bill, which would extend coverage to tens of millions of uninsured people and ban insurance companies from turning people away. President Barack Obama has the health care overhaul the defining social goal of his young administration. Hoyer acknowledged that the vote could be tight, and he said his prediction of passage is predicated on the expectation that a couple remaining obstacles can be surmounted.
Hoyer said the bill's endorsement by the powerful seniors' lobby AARP, announced Thursday, was a significant boost.

AARP Senior Policy Adviser John Rother said the 40-million strong organization favors the House bill because it closes the coverage gap in Medicare prescription benefits, puts strict limits on what health insurers can charge older workers too young for Medicare and creates a voluntary, long-term care insurance program.

"The bill does improve quality, and it improves access," said Rother. "When people hear this message from us, it will have impact." AARP will reach out to its state and local chapters ahead of the House vote, particularly in districts with a large numbers of older people and a lawmaker who's undecided.

The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network also announced its support for the legislation Thursday, and the American Medical Association, which had endorsed an earlier version of the bill, scheduled a midday press call to weigh in.
It still doesn't change what's been happening with members leaving. Maybe some will come back. Maybe they'll keep leaving. Stay tuned.

              • I think this is a fair point:

In a way, you can see the House decision to vote on health care this Saturday as a direct response to the elections. Bottom line: Don't give wavering lawmakers more time over the weekend to think about the election results or listen to punditry; just get their vote done. Also, the quick health-care vote is an attempt to put some pressure on the Senate. The fact is this: If health care slips into 2010, it could die…
                First Read MSNBC

As an aside, “die” is not a word I have heard or read much in the “mainstream” press with regard to the health-care bill's prospects.

                • Obama Writing Health Bill to Skirt GOP Filibuster

By piggybacking the legislation onto a budget bill, Democrats would be able to advance the bill with a simple majority of just 51 votes, averting a Republican filibuster in the Senate.
Or they can use the aggressive and contentious tactic, known as reconciliation, to pass a far-reaching health care bill in the Senate without having to face the GOP. Democrats lost their ability to block filibusters when Massachusetts Republican Scott Brown won a Senate seat last month.

Both parties have used reconciliation rules in the past. But Republicans have practically dared Democrats to do so on health care, citing polls showing significant opposition to the legislation.
House congressional aides said they expect leaders such as Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., to tell colleagues that using all their parliamentary muscle to pass a health care bill -- even if it triggers withering criticism from the right -- is preferable to facing voters empty-handed this fall.

If you were a moderate Democrat and still had a shred of integrity and sense of duty to your country, why would you allow this to happen? How can their be 51 traitors in the Senate?
