  • Guantanamo Bay

This topic keeps coming up in a bunch of different threads, so I thought I'd start a thread that hopefully some of the discussion could stay in.

We all know what has been said and promised and decided and blah, blah, blah.

Where are they actually thinking of sending them?

I was talking with someone the other day and he had a good idea. Fix Alcatraz and put them there. Only 1 person ever escaped. I don't care that it's a museum. Close it, fix it, and send them all there. I thought this was the best idea I had heard yet on the issue.

Reopening Alcatraz means more govt money to fix it up. It would be cheaper & easier just to keep Gitmo open. Gitmo is on an open lease deal forever.

Do we have enough vacant prison space here in America to house those extra prisoners? The topic of overcrowded prisons is talked about occasionally, and I don't think the problem has gone away. Is closing down a prison the right thing to do for overcrowding?

How many prisoners are in Gitmo?

Our Senators don't want them in Kansas.

            Where else besides Ft. Leavenworth?

And I believe there are about 200 prisoners at Gitmo. Overcrowding is an issue here, so I don't think there is the capacity to house them at any of the current prisons.

How much fixing up would Alcatraz really need? As far as I'm concerned, they don't need anything fancy.

Senator Roberts: "Not on my watch."

Congresswoman Jenkins: "........over my dead body".

Illinois seems like a logical destination to me.

How many big federal prisons are there now? I can only think of Ft. Leavenworth and Sing Sing (sp?). I guess there is probably another military prison as well somewhere, but don't know where.

Something else, and I don't see this discussed often and perhaps I am naive but they are not closing the base are they?

They are only closing the detention facility, correct?

That is somewhat of a strategic location to keep tabs on a variety of potential problems. Please tell me we aren't giving that up over some bleeding heart liberals bent out of shape over a couple of terrorists getting waterboarded?

What about the supermax prison in Colorado? Lock em up there so they'll never have human contact again for the rest of their lives. Do that and they'll be praying to Allah to head back to Gitmo.

Plus Colorado voted for BO's change so they can have it.

Can they even be sent to a Federal prison before a trial? Some place that is separate from the regular prison population, like Alcatraz, would see to work if they fixed it all up. I wonder if they could get it fixed up within a year.

Yes. I also might shore up our border with Colorado as well, just in case. These goons getting off on a technicality (very possible) and having them released into the general public because their own countries won't take them back is what scares the living daylights out of me.

Of course. Nothing like spending an EXTRA couple hundred million or so of OUR MONEY on non-Americans, being held for trying to kill Americans, so they can have their day in an American court.

                          Brilliant.

Not NEAR as many as the talking heads and bleeding hearts would like you to believe.

And compared to the third world countries these guys come from, any prison facility in the US- and the accompanying lifestyle- will seem like heaven to them... minus the 72 virgins.

EDIT: looks like rr already answered the Q.

This is so stupid. Give them a choice. They can either go back to their country of citizenship and take their chances with those courts of law or they can stay right where they are, forever. 3 squares a day and no waterboarding. If they don't follow rules then they get 1 month of solitary lockdown. I'll even allow the UN to oversee the decision making process.

Something tells me you are going to end up with 200+ return addresses that say Towelhead...Gitmo.
