That's why Gitmo makes so much sense.

I would not be surprised if they stay at Gitmo but with very specific interrogation rules that allow Obama and the feel-good lefties to save a bit of face.

As I mentioned in a different thread, this executive order is only symbolic. I’m sure he would love to close Gitmo but Obama can’t right now – or he would be foolish to do so and I don’t think he is foolish. He can’t transfer the detainees because no country is exactly eager to take them on – for obvious reasons.

You also have a whole host of issues, i.e. should they get a trial and if so in what forum? I would submit it might be difficult to place some of these detainees on trial for war crimes in a civilian setting when most, if not all, of the evidence against them is classified.

Again, I just don’t think there is a responsible way to shut down this facility in one year.

If any of you heard the presser explaining this decision, I can assure you that the President doesn't have a clue of what is going to happen. There is basically a plan, to make a plan, to figure out where and how and when, to plan the planning of planning the closure. Right Gregg? He actually had to ask his chief of staff what in the hell he just signed.

It's one of those things that if Bush had acted the way Obama acted, it would have been another reason Bush was a dunce and wasn't calling the shots. But since it's Obama.....

Kansas Sen. Roberts Threatens to 'Shut Down Senate' over Gitmo

In a press release on his Senate Web site, the Republican threatened to shut down the Senate. Later at a press conference with Kansas reporters, Roberts reiterated his condemnation of Leavenworth as the new Gitmo prison.

"I've said it once and I'll say it many more times: Not in my back yard. Not in Kansas,” Roberts said. “I will shut down the Senate before I'll let that happen."
