I think the biggest time suck on this entire forum is to engage @seskridge: in any context. First and second runner-up goes to @shocka kahn:. Pot Stirrer Award goes to @MoValley John:, obviously. Honorary mention for @jdshock: and @Jamar Howard 4 President:, but at least with those two you feel like you are having a legitimate debate with a person of reasonable intelligence, with critical thinking skills, and of right-mind.

Two things:
-I have been too busy with other things today to know to what exactly you are referring.
-I am also not even close to being a fan of Campaign Trump and even several examples of President Trump.

That said, I think he does have a compassionate side somewhere in his personality. I remember watching a documentary on the 1990s/2000s when a Miss America candidate/winner (can't exactly remember whole story) was busted for alcohol/drug abuse when Trump was still leading that program. It was expected that she would get the book thrown at her, but Trump announced that she would not be banished but that he would see to it that she entered rehab. It also noted that he was sympathetic to this young lady because his brother died of alcoholism many years ago.

Arrogance doesn't bother me. All high-level leaders have it. If Trump can lose the "a-hole demeanor" and show more of this apparent even-keeled, diplomatic spirit, I can start listening to him and would encourage others to do so as well.

Ignoring this thread for the past 10 hours or so has been exceptionally rewarding. I notice that nothing improved during the time I wasn't reading it.

One thing I've observed previously that's been confirmed in this thread is that people tend to believe what they want to believe and doubt what they don't want to believe. When someone's mind is made up it is pointless to attempt to confuse them by presenting them with facts.

The present political climate reminds me of WWI with both sides dug into trenches and a "no man's land" in between the two lines of trenches.

OK, let me throw this one out.....I know there will be people who will disagree.

I think we need to tighten the rules on who can purchase guns. We have (at least in Texas and I suspect in other places) enacted laws which make it too easy for nutty people to buy guns.

The population of nutty people includes people of all political stripes, we found that out yesterday.

Let a nut buy an assault rifle (and I don't really care to get into the AK/AR conversation and what the definition of an assault rifle is) and turn him loose, you can get a whole lot of carnage. If it hadn't been for the law enforcement officer's bravery there would have been a whole lot of people dead.

I have raised comments here numerous times asking why someone needs something like this to go hunting. It may be legal to own one of these guns, but it was only luck that drove the outcome yesterday. The cops were clearly outgunned by the nut, and it was obvious to everyone.

The least we could do is to make sure the people buying these guns aren't looney (or have a history of mental problems).

I agree that we need laws to protect us from crazy gun owners. I believe that generally we have those (and MoValleyJohn can point them all out). There are certain additional restrictions that I could be on board with, but I'd have to hear them out on a policy level and an impelementation level before I'd be willing to pass judgement. What I'm not okay with is the restriction of semi-automatic weapons on a broad based scale, which has been the main solution that has been put forward.

Why do I believe in gun ownership? Beyond the regular sportsman/home defense issues, I absolutely believe in the right to protect myself against tyrannical rule. I do not believe that we are currently under tyrannical rule, but that can change, and I believe that some of the teachings of the extreme left and extreme right could lead to this conclusion should they become main stream. A look at the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany demonstrates that NORMAL, NON-RADICALIZED citizens can become complicit in mass atrocity in the name of ideaology. THIS ACTUALLY HAPPENED.

I prefer, over radical violence, a peaceful means of preventing a potential bad outcome; which is why I am a proponent of free speech. Speaking the truth is a means by which bad ideas are marginalized peacefully and good ideas are adopted by society. If free speech, the mechanism by which we enter into negotiation with society, is shut down then a move towards a slave/tyrant relationship is set in motion. At that point, physical violence; war, is only remaining mechanism to prevent slave/tyrant mentality and to avoid the Nazi/Socialist outcome.

I do not condone in any fashion any acts of violence that have been displayed in this country in the name of radical idealism during my lifetime. I am willing to accept that these acts, as terrible as they are, are a consequence of freedom from oppression. I choose to accept, and address the abhorant violence of an individual today through free speech, so that I don't have to address the abhorant violence of a society in the future.

First off, I have always been in favor of managing who can and cannot have guns. Unfortunately, no liberal proposals have been acceptble.

To begin, anyone denied gun ownership must have due process and a means to challenge.

A set criteria must be established as to who can, and cannot own firearms.

The government must make background checks free for private sale gun transactions. A set number of sales should be established to determine a threshold for requiring a FFL.

When the gun control crowd wants to tackle these issues, I'm all on board. Unfortunately, they don't. They want to talk about "reasonable" gun control, but when you drill them for details, there is nothing reasonable about it. I wish the issue wasn't an all or nothing proposition by both sides, but it is. That is also why I don't belong to the NRA.

As forthe AR, it's a scary looking gun, but that's all it is. It operates no differently then any other gas powered semi-automatic. The benefits for recreational use are many. It is lightweight and compact, it is easy to climb into deer stands with. It is also the gun used by disabled hunters, small hunters, young, old hunters. Easy to use and not cumbersome. The gun is easily modified for special needs. Once again, mechanically, the AR is no different than any other semi-automatic hunting rifle. I know several people that hunt with them. The biggest drawback to the AR is its looks. The gun looks menacing. In truth, it's no more menacing than any other sporting rifle. Lots and lots of hunters use the old military rifles for hunting, they are larger calibers and can do a ton of damage, but nobody is complaining about that. You ban the AR, then you ban the M-14, eventually you ban the .22 plinking rifle.
