John Anderson, a Repubmocrat from Illinois, ran as an inependent in 1980, stealing votes from Carter. It is quite possible that Bernie, at 72, sees this election as his last chance. Running as an independent, he could split the Democrats vote this election cycle. Why is it so hard to believe that a pissed off Jim Webb would keep his one or two percent? It could swing a state.
Bernie could very much be this cycle's Ross Perot. Unless Trump starts losing and decides to also be defiant. Then there would be two of them but on opposite ends of the political spectrum which would result in no Perot at all. Meh.

Didn't Perot pander to conservatives but then endorse Clinton?

It was funny he announced he wasn't running, but his speech sounded like he was running.
