  • US Flag vs Cinco De Mayo

I'm curious on the liberal, conservative, and libertarian Shockernetter perspective on the 9th Circuit's ruling on the case discussed in this article:

Kung Wu say, man who read woman like book, prefer braille!

Seems like a bunch of idiots making a bunch of ado over nothing. The people waving the flags were idiots that wanted to use the flag as a shield. The people yelling at the flag-wavers were idiots that wanted to use their race as a shield. At least the majority of the students seemed to realize how much a non-issue this was.

But really, how could any adult justify jumping to either side? Two brain cells among the whole lot of them.

While visiting some distant relatives (I'm into genealogy) about 12 years ago, I noticed a Mexican flag flying in the middle of farm field. I asked about it and was told that there were threats that if anybody took it down there would be "problems" and that it had been there for years. When I enquired a little further, they said there are a good number who say "they will take back California without firing a shot". The people we were visiting were not at all racist and never uttered a word about it other than at that time. There was no lumping of all those with Mexican heritage.

I guess I've always had this idea that the American flag is a symbol of unity among a melting pot of people, not one of "symbol of racial animus". If this were strictly about Cinco De Mayo and not about any other time, I would agree with you. I believe strongly on people honoring and remembering their heritage. However, I believe it may run much deeper than that for many on both "sides" and this special day brings it to the forefront.

Live and let live. Isn't that what America is all about?
