I, like 99% of Americans, don't fully understand how government spending and budgets work. What I do know is that the numbers can be juggled around to satisfy a target or budget.
I was the GM of a resort in Texas for about 5 years. Our BOD was made up of mostly state of Texas department heads. Every November they insisted that I have a budget to present for the next year. And every November they insisted I spend all budgeted money in its appropriate category by years end, whether we needed something in that category or not. I refused and spend the money on items that would enhance the resort in order to attract more folks. The income could vary greatly one year to the next for many reasons, so any budget was based on best guess estimate of revenues generated. The BOD was constantly on my a$$. But in my 5 years I was able to double employee salaries as well as add several employees to our payroll. Our revenue more than doubled until the COVID year 2020. And that was a different story, but we stayed in the black that year as well, because my theory was to only spend on items of need first and improvements second. To hell with their budgets.

Which is why I'd say having a BOD made up of those who've spent too much time in gov't is a very bad idea. Especially if they don't actually have any business sense. Good on you for being the adult in the room.
The ceiling really shouldn't be raised and definitely shouldn't be abolished. Government needs to pull their heads out of their asses and stop spending. They need to stop funding and being involved in things that they have no business being in. They need to be more accountable to the money they do and should spend, as they overpay for pretty much everything. The $500 hammer isn't much of a myth.
I know Rand Paul does his Festivus list every year about just some of the ridiculous things the Federal Government is spending money on. I'm hopeful that DOGE will bring even more inefficiencies and such to light. They won't have the power to actually do anything, but hopefully shining a light on things for the public will increase pressures for Congress to actually do something about it and hopefully voters will pay attention and vote out more of the culprits on both sides who continue to stuff funding for bullshit down the American taxpayers throats.Infinity Art Glass - Fantastic local artist and Shocker fan

The debt ceiling has diminished purpose now other than to allow Congress to have a political Christmas by attaching riders and pork or grandstanding when the debt ceiling has to be raised -- because it DOES have to be raised. It's now just a political tool for the snakes to get more stuff or point fingers. I guess one positive is it makes citizens like us have a discussion about debt. But it sure doesn't influence Congress in that manner.

If Congress wasn't full of ****ing budgetary idiots the debt ceiling wouldn't need raised every ****ing year. It continues to get raised because they continue to ****ing over spend.
I'll take whatever pain necessary to get things in ****ing order. The debt ceiling doesn't do a damned thing when they know they'll just raise it and not change anything they ****ing do. In that case, you're right, it serves no purpose and doesn't do a damned thing. If it didn't exist, nobody would ever be aware of their cluelessness when it comes to budgetary matters. Having to raise it every year at least lets the public know they ****ing suck at their jobs. The problem is, the public doesn't ****ing care on the whole and keeps putting these inept assholes in positions of power to **** over the rest of us.
If we didn't raise it every damned time they would actually have to do something productive. Taking it away just puts their ineptness out of mind when it comes to their spending addiction and that doesn't do the public any good whatsoever and removing it is about the least conservative thing they could do when it comes to monetary policy. This is the only time these matters come up and with it gone people just won't even hear about it.Infinity Art Glass - Fantastic local artist and Shocker fan

Please go read how the debt ceiling works from an economy standpoint and stop assuming that because it has the words "debt" and "ceiling" placed closely together that it's a control on Congress' spending decisions. It isn't.
For the last time: Not raising the debt ceiling will wreck the economy in myriad ways. That's a scorched Earth way to control Congress' spending that would cause every American to suffer, and probably cause a global war. We could also change Congress' spending by dropping a nuke on New York, but that doesn't seem rational either.
The debt ceiling should be abolished and replaced with a mechanism that actually prevents Congress from overspending, such as capping the percent of revenue they can budget, forcing an overage that can be applied to debt.
