  • MAGA - Unlimited Debt Ceiling Needed

Republicans devised a new plan after Trump and MAGA opposed it: suspending the debt limit for two years. Trump wants the debt ceiling abolished. What could go wrong with that?

Trump, for his part, endorsed the new spending deal — particularly the debt ceiling increase, which he called “A VERY important piece, VITAL to the America First Agenda.”

“SUCCESS in Washington!” he wrote on Truth Social. “Speaker Mike Johnson and the House have come to a very good Deal for the American People.”

Remember when the Republican party was about a "balanced budget amendment"? For at least the next 2 years, Democrats will be the fiscally conservative party until they take power back in 2026 - then, they will revert back to spending like drunken sailors at port.

Three dozen Republicans have rejected Trump's proposal to lift the debt ceiling.

Funny, the House of Representatives have 1 job - pass a budget. When is the last time they have ever did that instead of kicking the can down the road?

Sounds like Plan B failed last night and they're onto Plan C, which at least based on the following tweet, sounds more promising.

This is how all bills should be done.

Plan A, B and C failed. Plan D passed with almost unanimous Democratic support. The bill did not have the Trump-demanded debt limit suspension. They increased the debt limit by 1.5 Trillion, promising to cut 2.5 trillion next year. The bill funded everything at the same level until mid-March. They provided disaster relief and passed the farm bill for the next year. It will be interesting to see if Johnson will maintain the speakership in the next congress for going against Trump.

Trump is now demanding Chip Roy (R-Tx), a Conservative Representative of Texas, be primaried for not being liberal enough and fall in line behind Trump.

Donald Trump Jr - "It's not just the Democrats that are our foes. It's a vast majority of the Republicans," he said, referring to House GOP members who voted against the Trump proposal to suspend the debt limit.

I understand your concern, but the debt ceiling is raised to cover prior spending decisions made by Congress, not current or future ones.

What was their counter proposal for not defaulting on the interest on the debt, social security benefits, medicare and medicaid, military salaries and contracts, and federal employee salaries and pensions? Was it simply to default and risk destabilizing the US dollar and our global financial reputation?

Not if Trump got his way. He wanted the debt ceiling to be abolished or at least suspend till 2029. Then, when he saw that he had no chance in hell, he proposed suspending it through 2029. That means there would be NO LIMIT to future spending decisions.

There was no risk of defaulting on the debt at this time. Those negotiations come in 2025. This was about funding the federal government. Trump just tried to get rid of the debt ceiling so he could spend as much as he wanted once he got into office. 36 Conservative Republicans said no.

This is not how the debt ceiling works.

It is if they suspend it or abolish it like Trump proposed.

You would think so. You could say in theory that Congress might outspend the revenue, because they know that the debt ceiling has no limit -- but they never debate spending based on the debt ceiling. Because they understand that not raising the debt ceiling can crash the US dollar, cause a recession, or wreck our global financial reputation. The debt ceiling does not prevent Congress from making bad spending decisions, but it can wreak havoc if not raised.

The problem starts with Congress' spending problem. It ends with POTUS' veto power. The debt ceiling is symbolic but mostly irrelevant.

You need to ask if it’s Coldblooded or SB that is speaking here. They seem to be multiple personalities of the same person.

Well, that is a bipartisan true statement.

Trump doesn't know how to use the veto - he used his veto less than any president. And he never used a veto to reduce spending

It is so irrelevant that there is a debt crisis every year. The debt ceiling is the only thing there stopping the "Congress spending problem."

So you agree with Trump that the debt ceiling should be suspended for a minimum of 2 years?
