  • Shockernet Has Become Politically Polarized

It doesn't seem possible to be a Shocker fan and not support the predominant political opinion out here. I don't support Donald Trump and haven't supported him since the 1980's when I was working in real estate development and looked into how he was doing business because he seemed to be successful. He wasn't. He was technically bankrupt, but he was so deep in debt to American banks that they couldn't allow him to fail.

That knowledge and opinion has ostracized me from the mostly conservative crowd out here. Pretty much everything has become politicized and it's spread to ShockerNet.

    I don't wear a mask because I don't respect my rights. I wear a mask because I respect yours.

This forum has produced a loss of respect for the person and for the opinions of persons who have political attitudes that differ from the majority.

The uniting fact that we are all Shocker fans is being overwhelmed by the fact that we may want to vote for candidates that other posters don't want to vote for. Are we going to allow that to polarize Shocker fans?

Divide and conquer is a proven effective strategy and we are seeing that in too many aspects of our lives.

Basically, the left has no credibility any more. Some (many) are still literally insane with hatred because hillary lost, but she appeared, and rightfully so, as just an extension of the fraud who once called people concerned about job losses "bitter clingers." So, one could rightly call Trump's victory The Revenge of the Bitter Clingers ; D She also portrayed the President and people that voted for him as a joke. Her fans still do the same thing; it's in their hearts. They are delusional. Biden has said the same...

As far as masks go, worry about yourself and you'll be alright. Take extra care of the elderly and those with vulnerable preexisting conditions.

Unfortunately right now politics is the only game in town. When hoops starts back up, or when it's announced so, I know I'll be migrating over to that board, and quickly at that. Hell, even the recruiting forum is getting a little slow.

You’re right that everything is political. There has been no new movies, no sports, limited/no restaurants or bars since April. People are losing their jobs and their are ongoing riots. Even when they bring sports back on a limited basis, it’s still politicized.

My best friends are progressives and socialists. They’re really the only people I see outside of work right now. I mean SERIOUS progressives and socialists. One of my friends is raising their youngest girl as a boy. The other proudly aborted their third child. We aren’t friends because of our politics. I promise you those things disgust me. We’re friends because of other shared values. We still spend most of our time talking about and listening to each other on those things we most disagree about.

Aargh, it’s easy to read bad intentions into a 1-10 sentence post. Just because someone disagrees with you on one topic doesn’t mean we don’t have other shared values.

So, just asking here, how often do you call 'your progressive and socialist friends' liars when you disagree with them?

To me, part of the problem is the incendiary rhetoric that comes from both sides when disagreements arise. For instance, calling people you disagree with socialists. The equivalent of that would be 'I have many facist friends, even though they watch cranks on TV and consume their news from discredited sources, we can still pleasantly disagree'.

Just trying to point this out. The words we use when we form our thoughts can be a bar to effective communications.

Nobody calls you a liar for disagreeing with Trump's policies or having a different point of view, or even stating he is a bad person. But you do get called a liar when you still believe Trump colluded with Russia or when you say that Trump says racists are very fine people. Those are proven untruths beyond any doubt, and the only reason to continue to lie about them is for division. I find it laughable that the people that accuse Trump of lying are some of the most dishonest people in the world. If Trump is really so abhorrent, then why does the left feel the need to make up lies about him and push stories, books, articles, they know are false?

The irony in this election is that Trump was unjustly impeached for something Joe Biden actually did, and the same people that accused Trump of using his position of power to influence a foreign government are now propping up Joe Biden as the good guy. You can't even make this stuff up!

Too many people watching too much tv with too much 'gotcha' in it. Both on the left and the right. Both sides think it's a great thing to bring on a poor victim and then verbally abuse them in the name of ratings.

And when they do it, both sides say they are being objective. I disagree.

You didn't, but someone else did. Do you have a guilty conscience? Not only that, you go off the beaten path by bringing up Trump, which means you're just proving Aargh's point. Please show me where I specifically brought up Trump in my post. You can't.

I only call them liars when they lie. There are a lot of lies being told. I correct them with evidence when they have been told a lie. Only after showing them evidence of the lie, if they continue to live in an alternate reality, I will call them liars.

Socialist isn’t a derogatory term for socialists. They are literally members of the socialist party, and I mean literally, literally. My progressive friends identify as progressives and behave as such. None of them are activists though.

Ironic that the post started as a lamentation on political division and aargh brings up his hatred of the President in the first paragraph.

I don't have a guilty conscience at all. You asked if someone calls their friends a liar (I assumed you were referring to being called a liar on another thread), I merely pointed out that when you insist on saying something proven to be untrue (lying), you risk being called a liar. I only mentioned Trump because you were the one caught lying about what Trump said.

I think it's an issue when someone like myself, voting for Bush, Dole, W, W (regrettably), Obama x 2, and Clinton (would have voted for damn near any other Republican), would vote for Romney over Joe, is called a socialist because I am left of Barry Goldwater. I think taxes should be higher on individuals. I think the government could and should do more ameliorate poverty, increase educational access, improve infrastructure, and balance the budget. I want property and businesses owned and controlled by private citizens. I want people free to do and say as they will without fear of the government or the mob. Somewhere along the way that made me a socialist?

I think I was just telling the truth. I don't protect KKK or far right racist groups, and I've never heard an elected Republican official say tha.t the KKK doesn't exist. I'm sure that there are far right, racist groups getting into the fray in some of these cities to push their agenda. If the Democrats in these cities would just work together with the FBI and federal authorities to stop the violence and rioting, we could stop it. I say arrest all of the anarchists who are trying to cause problems.

George Floyd shouldn't have been murdered. I'm hoping they don't over charge him so he can get off but I hope that policeman goes to prison. However, not all police are bad and we need police in our open, free society or we will have lawlessness. And the biggest problem that has to be solved is that the right and left continue to value police as one of the answers to keeping our society open and free. Get rid of the bad police and keep the good. The left and antifa are becoming the new place that wants more authoritarian values (their values).

We can work together but we have to have shared values for the Constitution and Declaration of Independence. Historical America had the right values in 1776, but flawed people implemented those values. As time has gone on, the Declaration and Constitution has seen the following groups gain the rights of participation in voting, etc.
                            1. People who didn't own land gained the right to vote
                            2. People of all races gained the right to vote (given in the 1860s but some states took that right away by various means until the Civil Rights Acts in 1960s)
                            3. People of both genders were given the right to vote.
If I've left anyone out, please add them.

I believe that Black Lives Matter
I believe that White Lives Matter
I believe that Unborn Black and While Lives Matter
I believe that Lives of Seniors Matter
I believe that All LIves Matter.
