Trading Zach, as much as it may suck, could work out very well for the Royals. It's going to take a hell of a deal for him to be moved.
I'm confident that whatever the Royals end up doing, they will screw it up. They have been bad for so long it is their nature.

Plus it not what the Royals want anyway since Grienke has the ability to block up to 20 teams.

    • He does have I believe 15 teams he won't go to. But Dayton isn't going to trade him unless he gets a ton in return and everybody knows it. That's why a number of teams have eliminated themselves. I still have faith in Dayton to make the correct decision here. The organization is much better off than it was before he arrived. He is not Allard Baird.

In what way? Hasn't translated in wins. They perrinially finish last and there isn't any signs that is going to change any time soon.

        • It has also been reported that he'd be willing to waive his no-trade clause for just about any winning team. So there are probably still about 20-25 teams that he would go to.

Once Moore took over and rebuilt the scouting I gave them a clean slate from the past. Unless we trade Greinke for squat, he's a no-lose proposition. You either get the value from him playing out his contract and getting draft pick compensation (which the Royals are turning into gold, it seems) or you get good players in return.

I, for one, have my doubts that Greinke is going to perform his best for KC after last season and the comments he made. I'm not convinced he's "ace" material every year, but more hit-and-miss. I don't think his trade value will ever be higher than it will be once Cliff Lee signs.

Do you pay any attention to what's going on in the organization or just look at the wins and losses of KC?

Dayton is doing A LOT of things right.

            • Seen a couple articles saying teams should bypass Cliff Lee and go after Greinke. Other articles saying teams should wait on Cliff Lee deal to use as a base for what to offer Greinke.

Nationals want to give Cliff Lee a 7 years $200 million deal. Baseball is getting insane.

The Nationals are getting insane. They've already given Jayson Werth a huge multi-year contract.

You know wins is a pretty common metric to judge an organization by.

19 - No. 1 picks over the last 11 years (10 of them in top 10) and what do they have to show for it? Perennial Mid-60's wins type team.

                  • All due respect SB, but you can't judge an entire organization's current overall health by how many wins the major league club compiled last season. I also question whether you've followed the farm system enough to recognize the difference between now and the previous decade or two.

It used to be that KC had two, maybe three prospects that the organization and fans were excited about and expected contributions in the majors. Outside of Beltran and Greinke and maybe Gordon and Butler, none of them were considered to be top prospects outside of KC.

Now they are stacked with what almost every baseball pundit, scout and GM considers to be the best farm system in baseball - and by a large margin.

                    Mike Moustakas
                    Eric Hosmer
                    Wil Myers
                    Chris Dwyer
                    Danny Duffy
                    Mike Montgomery
                    John Lamb
                    Tim Collins
                    Johnny Giovatella
                    Christian Colon
                    Jeremy Bianchi

And that's just the high minors of which I'm probably still leaving a few out. They have several more in the low minors who are getting attention.

                    • Royal pretty much covered it and I think he may be missing a couple of guys as well. Moore is NOT Baird and has NOTHING to do with what went on before. Things are different and the health of the organization is better than it's ever been, post strike at least.

                      • Im as excited about the farm system as anyone. Considering what was there when Dayton took over he has done an exceptional job at restocking it. It is very deep.

With that said Alex Gordon was touted by everyone to be the greatest thing ever and he's busted pretty bad. (well to the extent of being the greatest thing ever) yeah thats not on Moore at all but while I am as excited as the next guy about the guys in AA and AAA Ill try and hold off until they come up.

I do think Dayton is doing the right thing by bringing them up slowly.

I do not have a whole lot of confidence in Dayton trading Zack. His major league deals have left much to be desired. While I dont want to see Zack go I understand why he would be moved. He's crazy if he okays a trade to Toronto though. They are in worse shape than the Royals.

                          • Here's how I'm looking at a Greinke trade.

#1. His contract is up after 2012. 2013 is the target year for making the playoffs. It gives our young guys time to have a year or so in the majors to complete their development before breaking out. I don't see Zack signing an extension so he doesn't help KC when his contribution will be most valuable.

#2. I'm not convinced he's a consistent ace pitcher. He's as likely to repeat 2010 (10-14, 4.17 ERA) as he is 2009 (16-8, 2.16 ERA). Right now it appears GMs (and definitely the baseball media) are seeing Zack, version 2009, as though 2010 never happened. His trade value will never be higher, IMO.

If he puts together another season with anything close to a 4 ERA, we'd be lucky to get one good major-league prospect for him. As it stands now, most think he's worth two and maybe three, with a B-level prospect thrown in for good measure. Even if Moore doesn't hit the jackpot with Greinke, he's likely to get more now than he will later.

                              • I agree that is value may never be as high as it is now. That is unless he pitches for KC this year and reverts to half of what his cy young season was.
