I was surprised about tornado watch. Read all day about SC Kansas getting hail larger than golf balls after 10pm but nothing about tornadoes.

only thing I can think of is they are being cautious since this is going to be a night time event possibly when people are in bad. Plenty of instability, but strong cap. Which makes for either big bust or explosive environment.

Yeah what's up with that guys?

What conditions are occuring that we (you) didn't expect that has prompted this action?

And thank you to all for your input.....I don't relish seeing any damage, much less anyone hurt, but I've always been fascinated with extreme weather.

Be safe, and keep up the good work.

Well the CAP is weakening over the Warm Sector (southern KS Most of OK). The Warm sector should start to lift very slowly into Central/SC KS tonight.

The Lower Level Jet is very strong in OK from the South East. With Upper Level winds Basically South westerly this allows for some clockwise turning winds as you proceed up through the atmosphere. If an updraft fires in this area (as it has already in Oklahoma) with the Moderate-High Instability in place it will quickly become rotating. Thus the tornado potential does exist with any storm with a rotating updraft. Any storm that fires in that area will have a rotating updraft is what the SPC is saying.

The Warm Sector should stall out in SC KS tonight. Instability will increase and the LLJ will pick up across KS.

That is about the only reason I could see for issuing the Tornado Watch.

As SB Shock said this will be a Boom or Bust Situation, right now I am leaning more on the Bust side but things could change. Just have your weather radios turned up tonight!

I just don't see anything getting surface-based tonight, which makes it almost impossible for any tornadic development.

The cell down in Woodward, OK has had a tornado warning with it for a while, but nothing confirmed. Probably rotation up in the upper parts of the storm, but again, nothing at the surface.

I'm really surprised, like you guys, about the tornado watch. I think that was slightly overkill, but I guess you'd rather be overkill in weather situations than less cautious.

Nice radar grabs, wsushox. Again, just an amazing signature.

Tomorrow looks ok, but the veering surface winds would make it seem more like a wind and hail threat for our area, with any tornado threat farther north and east. Definitely nothing as widespread as Monday.
            Deuces Valley.
            ... No really, deuces.

The CAP really prevented another very active tornado day in OK. The shear/instability parameters were great again tonight ( not as good as yesterday's though) but no storm could break the warm layer of the atmosphere. Probably a good thing considering yesterdays storms.

Just got into OKC and met that group that chases on that tv show. Chatted with him a few minutes. Talked about yesterday and how lucky Wichita got and got some great footage near Woodward OK. Doesn't have a clue where headed tomorrow.

A storm chaser just reported a tornado on the ground near Preston in Pratt County Kansas. With another funnel cloud 80% to the ground 4 miles southwest of Penalosa.

Screen grab from GrLevel3 near the time of the report.

                      • Looks as if we will be in more of a summer pattern for a while now. Planty of moisture, great instability, but no upper level shear. I would expect in the days coming to get pulsar type storms in the afternoon.

                          • Pretty lame storm season for Wichita so far but we can still get hail storms like we did last July 8th.

                            • my perception is June (have not looked to see if data would verify) is as big of month as may for severe weather. But the pattern seems very benign.

                              • There's still over 3 weeks left in the month. June is the wettest month of the year in Wichita, just ahead of May.
