True, acoustic popcorn ceilings are so 70's and 80's but tell me what's up.
They were used mainly because it was a cheap way to cover the ceiling without have the do the additionial work to get them perfectly smooth for paint.
They were supposed to provide noise reduction, most contain styrofoam but some of the early installation are filled with asbestos.Let's hope he can hit a D-1 Curve ball!

Not all contain asbestos. The ban came in 1978, though contractors were allowed to use up existing stocks of the material after that. They usually have about 5% asbestos, some a little more, some a little less. A true popcorn ceiling is pretty old fashioned.
Most are sprayed now and knocked down now, again so they don't have to be perfect for paint.Let's hope he can hit a D-1 Curve ball!
