  • A Wanton & Freakish Question

When and where did the popcorn/crackled sprayed ceilings become the norm, and perhaps most importantly, why?

What are you referring to? True, acoustic popcorn ceilings are so 70's and 80's but tell me what's up. Please don't tell me that you also saw glitter flakes inmbedded in the texture too?

Talking about this unholy invention? :-x

You are a little late with your dating there son, try the 40's and 50's for the intro.

They were used mainly because it was a cheap way to cover the ceiling without have the do the additionial work to get them perfectly smooth for paint.

They were supposed to provide noise reduction, most contain styrofoam but some of the early installation are filled with asbestos.

Since I was not born in the 40's, 50's or 60's, I guess I was not familiar with the introduction of this product. But I can tell you, I've seen new construction today with this which boggles my mind.

Popcorn ceilings were popular from the late 50's into the 80's.

Be careful when removing "popcorn" ceilings. It's full of asbestos.

Not all contain asbestos. The ban came in 1978, though contractors were allowed to use up existing stocks of the material after that. They usually have about 5% asbestos, some a little more, some a little less. You can have testing done to find out before you remove it.

I live in a newer house in Derby (2004) that has the popcorn. I don't know what the big deal is if a house has it.

A true popcorn ceiling is pretty old fashioned.

Most are sprayed now and knocked down now, again so they don't have to be perfect for paint.
