Opposition Emerges to Multimillion-Dollar Plan to Buy Planes for Government Officials

"The whole thing kind of makes me sick to my stomach," said Mrs. McCaskill in an interview Sunday. "It is evidence that some of the cynicism about Washington is well placed -- that people get out of touch and they spend money likes it's Monopoly money."

Bipartisan opposition is emerging in the Senate to a plan by House lawmakers to spend $550 million for additional passenger jets for senior government officials.

Interesting study here Doc. There are different opinions, only time will tell.
Im sure you wont give Obama credit for anything. You might note the article does give Bush credit for trying.

I do appreciate Doc that you dont normally use the ridiculous sources that are the basis for most of the right winged threads. 8)

My comment was tongue in cheek but I absolutely will give credit to our President when I think he is deserving of it. I gave him credit for being a leader when he smacked the VP for making fun of someone at the inauguration. I would like to see other people give him credit, and not himself patting himself on the back. He's not running anymore, he should be leading the most powerful country in the world. He doesn't act like it.

Anything can be spun. Unfortunately we get very little real news. That being said, please don't compare FoxNews with the Huffington Post. What you call right wing I call common sense and the law. What I call left wing you call progressive. I want people to be responsible for themselves, you want a few people to decide for everyone. It is unlikely we are going to change each others' opinions. My beliefs are backed by the document that the country is founded upon. Your's are not.

We are approaching the same % of the GDP with very, very little in common with those times and absolutely NO end of governmental growth in sight. NONE.

Lastly, you (and most people) are putting WAY too much blame/praise on the President. It's the House and the Senate that have much more to do with spending. The one anomaly occured in the early years of this decade when the Republican controlled House acted horrifically irresponsibly in their spending and hastened the inevitable fall (of course there was 9-11 but that was just an inside job anyway). Somehow now the argument from the Democrat side seems to be "they were horrible, but we will actually go way beyond horrible and it will be great, trust us."

Aggressive stimulus spending by governments helped the world avoid a second Great Depression but full economic recovery will take two years or more, Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman said Monday.

Krugman said the worst of the global crisis was over with economic and exports growth showing signs of stabilization. Still, recovery was likely to be "disappointing" as government spending wasn't sustainable in the long-run and unemployment rate still lagging behind, he told a two-day world capital markets conference here.

We have managed to avoid a second Great Depression ... but full recovery is at least two years and probably more,"
Krugman said there was still room for the U.S. government to increase spending to boost growth, despite concerns over its swollen budget deficit.
Krugman, who teaches at Princeton University, won the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences last year for his analysis of how economies of scale can affect international trade patterns.
But of course what does this guy know! :D 8)
If you read about the "Great Depression", most economist will tell you that what made it great was government intervention. UCLA study says the depression was extended by the FDR New Deal by 7 years (from 8 to 15).

Since (what some call the "Great Recession") the books are not closed on this recession it is a little early to say how this will be regarded by future generations. Lets hope things start turning around soon. But all the proposed government spending and future programs really scare me.

But at least from the relatives that I have talked to (ranging from construction, landscaping, engineering, banking and auto dealer) that don't see things getting any better and expect it to get worse.

I hate how right wingers are quick to discount anything from CNN or MSNBC. But believe sources such as the Drudge Report or right wing blogs??? BLOGS are opinions. Not facts. And if you guys read TIME magazine you would see that less then 10% of the stimulus has been spent. Q3 and Q4 of this year and Q1 and Q2 of next year are when 50 percent of the funding will be spent. Sorry for my rant. Just wanted to get my opinion out there. Its late and I apoligize if I make myself look like an idiot. As WuDrWU said no story does not have a "spin" on it.

Pardon me for interjecting a question based on simple common sense:

Why hasn't the stimulus been spent? What are we waiting for? I know several people who have been out of work for months. They don't need to wait any longer. Their families cannot wait any longer.

What's wrong with a simple federal tax holiday? Why can't we do something simple and effective instead of a multitude of wasteful pork programs designed to pay back polticial favors?

Because politicians care more about getting re-elected than doing the right thing

My guess is that they didn't want to rush all that money out at one time. You wouldn't like it if all the money was rushed out and was spent in a flurry without anyone keeping track. Yes the stimulus was rushed but it has passed. We need to spend it as wisely as possible. Spending it all at once as you guys suggested is not a good idea. Make up your mind. You want it spent fast but if they do that then they "spent it recklessly". You can be on both sides of the river, you can't have it both ways.

Couple of things. Right now, "we" can't have it either way, much less both ways.

The argument the right is making is that if it is indeed stimulus then it needs to be spent now. Otherwise it is not stimulus, it's just big government paybacks designed to keep expanding big government. Call a spade a spade. We know "who won". If it is stimulus, spend it now. If you aren't spending it now then don't try and take credit for stimulus spending when it isn't happening.

I won't quote ISASO but he makes outstanding points and does so without rioting or being un-American. Is that ok? Please let us know so we can adjust how we are able to exercise our 1st amendment rights in this new world order.

Again, the simple, fair solution was to spend it all at once...in the form of a federal tax holiday.

If taxpaying citizens want to spend their immediate 25% raise on studying the mating habits of blue whales in Death Valley, let them write the check.

Otherwise, give the people their own money and get the H out of the way.

That's Stimulus we can believe in!
