Perfect editorial by National Review: Link

Arlen Specter belongs to a type familiar to Congress: the time-serving hack devoid of any principle save arrogance. He has spent three decades in the Senate but is associated with no great cause, ...no landmark legislation. Yet he imagines that the Senate needs his wisdom and judgment for a sixth term. He joined the Republican party out of expediency in the 1960s, and leaves it out of expediency this week.

We all know he jumped ship to save his own political butt because he wasn't going to win the Republican primary. Now it looks like he'll face Democratic oposition in their primary as well.

Specter lashed back Wednesday, strongly suggesting he had been betrayed.

In a statement released Wednesday afternoon, Specter said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., had promised him that his seniority would be preserved.
Pretty funny if you ask me.

I have some respect for Specter. After all, he was born in Wichita and his fondest memory of childhood is a house on Erie. (he graduated from high school in Russel, btw)

But this is ironic. (not ironic as in that Alanis Morissette song)

Party affiliation does matter. People changes viewpoints and parties, but when it is done for pure political expedience, is usually doesn't work. We'll see about our current Governor.

Specter didn't switch b/c the GOP changed. He's always been "moderate" - he led the charge against Bork. He changed parties b/c he thought it would be easier to ge re-elected.
