I've had the same thought. But for now, I'll take it...

Sen. Debbie Stabenow of Michigan, asked in a recent interview if she favored reinstatement, said: “I think it’s absolutely time to pass a standard. Now, whether it’s called the Fairness Standard, whether it’s called something else — I absolutely think it’s time to be bringing accountability to the airwaves.”
Absolutely chilling. Especially from someone who has taken an oath to abide by and defend the Constitution.

Memo to Stabenow. It is up to us, the citizens and consumers to hold them accountable. Not your sorry butt!

These people have become so indoctrinated by the idea that there are only two interpretations to anything they have completely lost perspective.

How the heck did the FCC get away with this in 1949? Was this country as asleep and apathetic then as now? Was there ever a serious legal challenge to it? If so, did the SCOTUS actually uphold it?

In 1949 there wasn't near as much media, so many people probably never knew about it at all.

Unless I missed it on the first read, that story appears to have been updated. The Senate actually passed the amendment by a wide margin.

On the flip side, Durbin has support on his bill that would more or less slip a version of the Fairness Doctrine in by forcing "diversity" in radio ownership.

I'm not totally sure how Durbins bill works but everything I've read hasn't sounded pleasent.

The wording I read was "encourage" diversity. But what the heck does that mean and how does one enforce "encouragement"?

If it means what the article says, it wouldn't require stations or shows to be "fair", meaning listeners could still choose and make it clear that there isn't enough of a market for the wrong side.

Encourage = Force when it comes to the gov't terminology in my mind.

There would be more liberal views on the radio if that's what people wanted to hear. It's been tried and not had much success.

Even on TV, the conservative leaning Fox News has the highest ratings in cable news and some of the top shows. I'm not sure MSNBC even shows up in the ratings with their far left views.

Back to the point thought, I won't feel comfortable about this issue until something solid has been decided. Right now, there's too much up in the air for me to "relax" on this issue.
