  • Why should I vote for a Republican for President?

As a registered Republican I will ask this question?

    1) Why should I vote for a Republican president when there has been a Republican president in office for 8 years and:

The government is not being reduced in size or spending. Far from it. Deficits are growing and the taxes I spend to pay interest on this debt is a major portion of my tax bill.

The U.S. has lost credibility in international and human rights affairs due to a war in Iraq that on its face was unnecessary and appears to have more to do with oil than WMD's in Iraq. (On this point I felt at the time that if reports were correct that Saddam had WMD's and was about to use them then we needed to go into Iraq and if the WMD's were not there then there should be hell to pay for the leaders who brought us and the troops the war. The leaders were not held accountable in 2004.

We, the U.S., tortured prisoners. This should never happen or be allowed. How can a government talk of human rights and do this?

The Al Queda organization has not been stopped or controlled.
Has the war in Iraq located Osama Bin Laden or stopped the spread of terrorists.

Taxes have not been lowered. The U.S. government is taking in more than they did in 2000.

Spending increases have not stopped. The budget is not balanced nor will it be for some time. It really concerns me that the Republicans constantly promise fiscal responsibility, less government and less spending but never follow through. These are spend and spend some more Republicans.

For 8 years now at airports we are alert level orange. Does anyone believe that this is going to change. Shouldn't this be the normal green level now? Is the policy to keep us scared? Does anyone pay anymore attention to the Orange level alert than if the same thing was said in a Green level alert?

Our troops ares stretched too thin. Our weapons depleted and wearing out. Much more spending will be needed to replenish the used up planes, tanks and other weapons.

There is no solution to the illegal immigration issue and it appears that the Republicans and Democrats actually are in favor of allowing this to continue so that they can get the working wages in line with the world economy. The answer is not in more and higher fences. It is to remove the incentive for the illegal aliens wanting to come here and that is for jobs. Employers need to be held accountable for who they employ.

There is no energy policy from the current administration to address the energy needs for the future. I knew in 1981 from classes that in 2020 to 2030 or there about easy oil (oil that can be pumped from the ground) was going to tail off. What we are seeing now is a blip from what will happen to prices in the future in 10 to 15 years.

So again after I have listened to McCain and the promises he makes, why should I vote for him when it appears that they just make promises to get elected and never follow through on them?

Those are all billion-dollar questions, engr, and many of the reasons why a lot of conservatives began getting behind Ron Paul, and now his Campaign For Liberty, which held it's own rally in Minneapolis earlier this week.

The GOP has lost its way and in my opinoin, doesn't deserve the support of conservatives this election cycle.

My gosh, engr, you could be my twin, as those are pretty much the same questions I have. I too am a registered Republican, but am totally sick of the Republican status quo. Now I would not frame myself as a conservative, but rather a moderate with libertarian leanings, so I still have a lot to ponder. The thing is, we all know who will get Kansas' electoral votes (I'll be stunned only if its anything less than a 10 % point spread), so I could vote for anyone I choose AND IT WON'T MATTER other than making a statement. I may just write in myself, or maybe Royal, or what the heck, maybe Cold or dofo!

      Sigh. Big sigh.

Yes, and all the succesful attacks on American soil since 9/11 enrage me as well.

Pick and choose your stances carefully when you talk politics. You may offend the doers instead of the decision makers. Just a piece of advice.

You can substitute Obama for McCain and say the same thing.

Both parties have a strangle hold on the political system in this country.

Ron Paul and whomever can run and raise all of the heck they want but a vote for them is a wasted vote.

Your first statement in the quote above is precisely why a 3rd party vote is not a wasted vote. Continuing to vote (support) the Republicrats will do nothing to help break the stranglehold. It only makes it tighter and encourages the party elite to ignore the will of the people.

That's one reason part of me would like to see the Republicans lose. They've moved farther and farther away from the conservative movement and it's gotten them in trouble. On the flip side, I think more harm would come from an Obama administration at this time. I really do wish a 3rd party could have more impact.

Voting third party is a noble gesture but it truly is a wasted vote.

It will take support from McCain and insure that Hussein gains the White House this time around.

Even though I don't agree with a lot of what he stands for, I respect Ron Paul with every bit I've got for standing apart and daring to be different than everyone else on the Republican ticket.

The man has some good ideas, he's an affable fellow, and he's trying as hard as he can to be a real man and purport the politics he feels would be best rather than being a sponge of every GOP talking point.
The truth will set you free. But first, it will piss you off.

If you wait around for someone else to do it, it won't happen.

(And for the record, Ron Paul is not and will not run 3rd party or independent. His efforts have shifted back to congress and the CFL. He's committed to affecting change from within the GOP.)

You shouldn't vote for a Republican or a Democrat. Just the same, you shouldn't vote against a Republican or Democrat. You should vote for who you feel will do the best job and right the most wrongs. I understand many get caught up in the principles behind the parties but in todays age when neither party really stands by those principles any longer and just about everyone from both sides stands square in the middle it kind of defeats the purpose. I say try looking at it without the labels, titles, affiliations, etc. Maybe it will help you to see clearer... or maybe it wont. Just a thought.
