We are considering ditching cable for Apple TV. My obvious biggest concern is seeing shocker basketball games. Is there access to the ESPN games and other games through Apple TV (watch espn, etc.). If I am not an espn cable subscriber, will I be able to catch the games that are on ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU? Thanks for any info anyone can provide.

Now Sling is not flawless, and there can be buffering issues, depending on your Internet connection's reliability -- but it's been pretty good for me. Also you will not have a DVR, so you are giving that up too. But at $20/mo for those channels plus your Internet bill, that's not a bad tradeoff.
Do you have a specific reason you are leaning toward the Apple TV?

I own an Apple TV, Roku and FireTV. You really can't go wrong with any one of them. It just comes down to what apps you are using and what interface you prefer.

For anyone who wants to ditch cable, the current offering of Apple TV is probably not enough, for the reasons mentioned about still needing a subscription. I have never heard of Sling TV, and may have to look into it.
I've heard some rumors that Apple is working on putting together a similar-sounding subscription service, so their next gen TV product may be a lot closer. The current Apple TV has been around for several years already.

Apple is planning to announce its streaming television service and its content partners at the Worldwide Developers Conference in June, ahead of a fall launch. Rumors have suggested the service will include approximately 25 channels and will be offered at a price between $30 and $40.

Further, while the above will get you general functionality for the AppleTV ESPN app, if you are local/regional (which you are not, I understand) you will not only need a cable subscription to watch all available WSU games, you'll also need to specifically be a Cox subscriber. Since a lot of the WSU content that ESPN streams is actually the Cox 22 stuff, you have to be a Cox customer to see that stuff on AppleTV, otherwise you are on a regional black-out. Don't think this would be an issue for you since you live in CA.
We're living in a (temporary) age where all of this is a convoluted charlie foxtrot.
