We are considering ditching cable for Apple TV. My obvious biggest concern is seeing shocker basketball games. Is there access to the ESPN games and other games through Apple TV (watch espn, etc.). If I am not an espn cable subscriber, will I be able to catch the games that are on ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU? Thanks for any info anyone can provide.

In my experience the Roku is much better than Apple TV. And Sling TV has been working pretty well with Roku, so you can have access to ESPN, ESPN2, HGTV, TBS, History, AMC, A&E, and a few more channels for $20/mo. Also if you go here, you can get some hardware at heavily discounted prices:

Now Sling is not flawless, and there can be buffering issues, depending on your Internet connection's reliability -- but it's been pretty good for me. Also you will not have a DVR, so you are giving that up too. But at $20/mo for those channels plus your Internet bill, that's not a bad tradeoff.

Do you have a specific reason you are leaning toward the Apple TV?

    Just my $0.02.

You will need a cable subscription login of some sort to be able to watch most games through the WatchESPN app. Whether that be your own cable login for Cox, AT&T, DirecTV, etc or your parents or someone, you'll need to log in to be able to access most of their content.

I own an Apple TV, Roku and FireTV. You really can't go wrong with any one of them. It just comes down to what apps you are using and what interface you prefer.

The $20 Sling TV subscription gives you access too.

For anyone who wants to ditch cable, the current offering of Apple TV is probably not enough, for the reasons mentioned about still needing a subscription. I have never heard of Sling TV, and may have to look into it.

I've heard some rumors that Apple is working on putting together a similar-sounding subscription service, so their next gen TV product may be a lot closer. The current Apple TV has been around for several years already.

Sling TV was being talked about here a couple of months ago.

You will need to watch what happens with apple TV in June. From MacRumors

Apple is planning to announce its streaming television service and its content partners at the Worldwide Developers Conference in June, ahead of a fall launch. Rumors have suggested the service will include approximately 25 channels and will be offered at a price between $30 and $40.

To use AppleTV to watch ESPN you will need either your own, or someone else's, login from a cable provider. The only way AppleTV works for "cord cutters" wanting ESPN is if you have someone willing to share (pirate) their cable login credentials with you.

Further, while the above will get you general functionality for the AppleTV ESPN app, if you are local/regional (which you are not, I understand) you will not only need a cable subscription to watch all available WSU games, you'll also need to specifically be a Cox subscriber. Since a lot of the WSU content that ESPN streams is actually the Cox 22 stuff, you have to be a Cox customer to see that stuff on AppleTV, otherwise you are on a regional black-out. Don't think this would be an issue for you since you live in CA.

We're living in a (temporary) age where all of this is a convoluted charlie foxtrot.

I have Apple TV and no cable. There are a ton of services you can subscribe to, which would run you as much as a cable bill. Personally, I sit in the front row of my living room and airplay the shocker games onto my tv. This has varying viewing qualities, but it gets the job done.
