That was quite the show. I think I witnessed even larger stones during the September 2010 hailstorm that took out the western half of Wichita.Deuces Valley.
... No really, deuces.

I wonder how long does a hail stone have to circulate around inside those supercell storms to become the size of a softball? It is really pretty incredible they can become so large. I would think they might weigh over 2 lbs when they're that large.Basketball Season Tix since '77-78 . . . . . . Baseball Season Tix since '88

It seemed post-apocolyptic seeing all the damage driving home. Almost worse than post-apocolyptic. Almost -- well almost like driving through Detroit.Kung Wu say, man who read woman like book, prefer braille!

You're right. Definitely a much more localized event.Deuces Valley.

I remember many years ago getting into softball-sized hail just outside of Walton, Kansas. The hail was very soft (it was late June or early July) so even though it dented the heck out of the car, it didn't do much else. I remember watching many of the hailstones hit and flatten (like a snow cone).
Right after the hail got that big, the tornado came. There was a guy in an 18 wheeler cattle hauler immediately in front of us - he had his rig floored and in the lowest gear and couldn't move.
When we crossed the BNSF tracks just outside Newton, we were at a high point (where the rail line was elevated) and we could look back and see the tornado on the ground. It wasn't huge, but it was much bigger than most of the tornados I saw growing up.

Pretty conditional risk, but if a supercell can get discrete in the latter hours of the afternoons there's some pretty nasty directoinal shear and instability that would favor strong supercells with tornadoes. The mountains are calling, and I must go.

The probs are high because there definitely will be severe weather....hail and wind.

Just looked at Visible satellite.....had no idea as much clearing happened as has happened (been in a bubble writing 15 page research paper). If the cap can keep things discrete it could get pretty nasty. The mountains are calling, and I must go.

4:50PM Warned, strongly rotating storm taking aim on southern OKC metro area. OKC should be warned on this storm very soon. KOCO has live video of rotating wall cloud and tornados dropping from it.Basketball Season Tix since '77-78 . . . . . . Baseball Season Tix since '88
