I find what NASA is doing extremely interesting. This is a thread to discuss NASA and space stuff. Some stuff that they are working on includes capturing a small asteroid and placing it in orbit around the moon. There is a lot of work being done in preparation for future manned flights to Mars. This is stuff we would have been watching in Scy-Fy movies only a few years ago and now we're on the cusp of it being reality.

Comet close fly by to Mars

Comet Siding Spring (C2013/A1) will come within 85K miles of Mars in October 2014. This is about a tenth of the distance of any known close flyby to Earth by a comet. Matter will be shed from the comet's nucleus at the rate of speed of 35 miles per second. At this speed even the smallest particles can cause considerable damage. Currently there are two Mars orbiters and a third is expected to be there about a month before the comets closest point to Mars. NASA must protect its Mars assets by maneuvering the orbits so that they will be positioned on the other side of Mars during the comets closest point to Mars. Even though the atmosphere of Mars is much thinner than Earth, NASA does not anticipate any damage to the rovers on Mars because NASA scientists believe that the atmosphere is still thick enough to protect them from the debris. Of course this will also provide NASA an opportunity to study the comet as it comes by Mars. I imagine that we are going to see some incredible pictures of the comet by the Mars rovers and orbiters.

Aliens on Moon - Is There Really an Alien Moon base?

"Neil Armstrong and 'Buzz' Aldrin's Story

Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin upon landing on the Moon, reportedly saw a number of UFO's on the surface of the Moon, watching them as they disembarked from their craft. Here is part of a radio exchange picked up by unnamed radio hams with their own VHF receiving facilities that bypassed NASA's broadcasting outlets:

"NASA: What's there? Mission Control calling Apollo 11...

Apollo: These "Babies" are huge, Sir! Enormous! OH MY GOD! You wouldn't believe it! I'm telling you there are other spacecraft out there, lined up on the far side of the crater edge! They're on the Moon watching us!""

        This one was close

This month marks the two-year anniversary of a coronal mass ejection (CME), one of the largest in recorded history, that came very close to causing extreme disruption to our daily lives. Through a rather unusual set of circumstances this solar superstorm hurled billion tons of clouds of magnetized plasma that went through earth's orbit. Fortunately earth was not in that position of its orbit at that time. Had the solar eruption occurred one week earlier we would probably still not have recovered from the effects of the CME as of today. Anything electrical would have been fried. Even toilets in urban areas would not flush because the sewer system relies on electrical pumps. Scientists estimate that there is a 12% chance that earth could be hit by a CME in the next 10 years.

Baby one night with the coronal mass erection and you'll be converting to solar power from here on out.

Should we consider going back to the moon?

While the United States focuses on its asteroid retrieval mission (ARM) and putting boots on Mars, countries such as China and Russia have the goal of putting humans back on the moon. Reading between the lines it appears that they look to some day have lunar colonies and perhaps mining minerals.

Keep Calm: The Truth About The Huge Solar Flare That Just Missed Earth

A huge solar flare would still be pretty bad and I'm guessing life as we know it would be put on hold for at least a decade. We wouldn't be prepared at all if something like that were to happen. I hadn't seen any of the "end of the world" headlines and that sensationalism isn't necessary, but I don't think the near miss needs to be downplayed either.

Out of this world driving record

The Mars rover, Opportunity, has set an off-Earth rover distance record. It has traveled 25 miles since its mission began in 2004. The previous record was held by the former USSR's lunar rover in 1970. If Opportunity can go the distance of 26.2 miles it will reach "Marathon Valley" its next major investigation site.

                  http://www.nasa.gov/press/2014/july/...l#.U9byOcu9KSN

Here is some info on the dimensions of Opportunity:

Opportunity (along with its twin, Spirit) is a six-wheeled, solar-powered robot standing 1.5 meters (4.9 ft) high, 2.3 meters (7.5 ft) wide, and 1.6 meters (5.2 ft) long and weighing 180 kilograms (400 lb). Six wheels on a rocker-bogie system enable mobility. Each wheel has its own motor, the vehicle is steered at front and rear and is designed to operate safely at tilts of up to 30 degrees. Maximum speed is 5 centimetres per second (2.0 in/s) although average speed is about a fifth of this (0.89 centimetres per second (0.35 in/s)). Both Spirit and Opportunity have pieces of the fallen World Trade Center's metal on them that were "turned into shields to protect cables on the drilling mechanisms".[9][10]

Solar arrays generate about 140 watts for up to four hours per Martian day (sol) while rechargeable lithium ion batteries store energy for use at night. Opportunity's onboard computer uses a 20 MHz RAD6000 CPU with 128 MB of DRAM, 3 MB of EEPROM, and 256 MB of flash memory. The rover's operating temperature ranges from −40 to +40 °C (−40 to 104 °F) and radioisotope heaters provide a base level of heating, assisted by electrical heaters when necessary.[11] A gold film and a layer of silica aerogel provide insulation.

It not a very good story - his story was just as bad as the story he was complaining about. The reality is if the event had happened we (USA) might have become a third world country.

I repeat, this line is a FAIL.

Actually she was the one who pitched the wine on me. In fact, this line is so bad I couldn't even get HER to come home with me.

Kung Wu places ball on tee. MoValley John decides not to play. Too easy.
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

Ok then, YOU try the coronal mass erection line on YOUR wife and let us know how it goes.
