I guess the running clock is one of the things that make Soccer different from a lot of other sports. However, the way they add additional time seems somewhat arbitrary and inexact.

ESPN's World Cup home page has a good tactical breakdown of Portugal's goal with Lalas talking through the goal second by second. His conclusion is that the off-ball defenders were more to blame than Bradley as too much focus went to Ronaldo and he had no real avenue given the numbers on that side.
