Anyone do business with these clowns? Honestly, probably the worst experience I have ever had. I take my computer into them with Screen damage that occured with me dropping my hefty graphing calculator on the screen and breaking the LCD screen. I ask them to do a screen repair. As soon as I walk in, they see that there is drop damage on my computer and try to say that their could be hard drive damage. I tell them no, there is not hard drive damage as I am not computer illiterate and know that my drive is healthy (diagnostic scan/de-frag etc.). They go, well we aren't going to do your screen repair without running a hard drive scan to make sure it is ok so we aren't liable if the drive goes bad. So I agree, but I tell them that I am only paying them to do a screen repair not meddle with my hard drive. They also asked me to see if I had everything backed up, I said I did. As I left I made the comment to my friend saying that they will probably call and say the hard drive is bad so they can grab more money from me.

Today I get a call from them saying your hard drive came back from the scan and it was defective; they say can't salvage any data from the drive. They then try to sell me a new drive and all the repairs that would come with needing to get a new drive. I then tell them that I used and transferred data using the hard drive that morning, I ask them " So you are telling me that in the 45 minutes it took me to come from my house to your store the hard drive went so bad that no data was salvageable?'" They replied, " Uhhh, yea that uhh appears to be the case". I am so pissed. I told them to not touch my computer again until I come to pick it up.

Another sign of their incompetence was when I asked what they did to find out the hard drive was bad. They said we used the manufacturers diagnostic program to see if anything was wrong, in this case they said Seagate. WRONG, it's a western digital drive. I then call someone who does repairs locally here in town who is held in high regard. He said that he's never heard of a drive that data isn't salvageable from unless it's been ran over by a truck. He said that Ribbit sounds as if they are BSing me.

TL;DR: Computer Fcktards at ribbit try to think they can swindle people they assume are computer illiterate into paying money for things that aren't wrong with their computer.

    I am unbelievably angry.

Don't do any business with Ribbit.

Went to them once to diagnose a computer for me, would never go back again. A month later had a laptop go out on me, took it to a smaller outfit and they did the same work ribbit had done for about 25% of the cost.

Anyone want to share recommendations of local computer people they feel have treated them well? Would like to know who to see if/when the need arises. Thanks.

I fix computers on the side for friends, family, friends of family...you get the picture. Unfortunately between everything else I have going on besides my wife and kids I don't have a lot of time for fixing them so it can be a week or two wait to pay half the price of Ribbit. Your drive could have damaged sectors and still be functional, but I would recommend replacing it. I wouldn't think dropping a large calculator on the laptop would damage the drive to the point where nothing can be salvaged. I can take a look if you want. PM me if interested.

A friend and former co-worker of mine started his own IT company in Hutch a few years back and I think now has a location in Wichita. I have not needed professional services from him but have heard others say they use him and have had good things to say.

Ribbit called back and explained in more detail their thought process - probably due to my irritated tone in the first call. They said that they "mistakenly" thought that the data on the drive was unaccessible but it turns out that they can salvage all the data. They then said that there are damaged sectors on the drive. In which they should have said in the first place without saying that the hard drive is "shot and defunct" without telling me the reason. I still am not going to replace the hard drive through them, but rather someone else. I apologized to the Ribbit guy that I was irritated with but if he would have told me it was bad sectors and not just the had drive went "shot and defunct" I would have responded differently - again I'm not computer illiterate.

Thanks for the offer Moose, but I'm going to use someone here in El Dorado.

It's a 1TB drive (I certainly don't need that much space) and if it is indeed going to go out here in the future I might just save for a SSD. Dunno yet.

You could give these guys a try, but they're clear out in Burbank, CA. If you do, ask for Chuck or Morgan.

I lost the main computer I make a living with to Ribbit for a total of 3 weeks this last fall, for a problem that was ultimately just a software issue requiring a clean W7 re-install. Totally made a charlie foxtrot out of my professional life for the better part of a month, for an issue that could have been fixed in 2 hours with the correct diagnosis. They did not try to upsell me, or otherwise BOHICA me in the pocketbook, but I would not recommend them to anyone.

Same experiences for me with Ribbit the most recent being a laptop issue. I needed a fan replaced and should have done it myself but I wasn't comfortable with the space restrictions the laptop presented so figured I'd have the professionals do it. I mean its a freaking fan replacement how can anyone screw that up right? I knew better after two jacked up experiences prior but I was about to head out of town for a couple weeks and needed that laptop and more importantly for it not to overheat. Well they ended up breaking the keyboard somehow (took 3 weeks to get a replacement)... this meant I was without the much needed laptop for my travels. After all of this they tried to charge me for the replacement keyboard that they broke. This is the third such issue I have had with them and I will NEVER under any circumstances give them my business again or recommend them to anyone. If I was on fire I would not let them spray me with hose and I'm not even kidding!
