KSN - WSU gets most significant industry contract' in its history
Wichita State University students and employees are getting the chance to help protect the president and the country in case of a future national emergency. WSU’s National Institute for Aviation Research (NIAR) will be part of the team that designs an aircraft into a command center for the president, secretary of defense, and chairs of the joint chiefs of staff.
The U.S. Air Force wants a newer version of its current E-4B “Nightwatch” aircraft fleet, which entered service in 1974. The Air Force chose Sierra Nevada Company (SNC) to modernize and deliver a replacement for the fleet. The Survivable Airborne Operations Center (SAOC) contract is a multi-billion-dollar award.
During a news conference in Wichita on Monday, SNC announced it has chosen NIAR as a partner in the project.
“This is the most significant industry contract in the history of the university,” John Tomblin, NIAR executive director, said.
The project involves 747-8i aircraft. One of the planes recently arrived at NIAR’s Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul Hangar, 4174 S. Oliver. Tomblin said NIAR will have over 400 people working on this program through staff and student jobs.
“The special part about this program is it combines the digital engineering side and the MRO side together, and I don’t know of any place in the world that does that,” he said.Infinity Art Glass - Fantastic local artist and Shocker fan

The current version and still flying aircraft, E-4B, entered service in 1980 (the E-4A came out in 1974).
Things newer than the E-4B aircraft:
Soft Contact Lenses (1981)
Compact Disc (CD) (1982)
IBM PC (1981)Kung Wu say, man who read woman like book, prefer braille!

I know it's been a couple of weeks since this announcement, but this is so big. I don't think it can be stressed enough :
Wichita State University has entered the top 10 in the country in engineering research and development (R&D) expenditures, according to data announced this week by the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Higher Education Research and Development Survey.
Wichita State is also ranked No. 1 for aerospace engineering R&D expenditures for the first time in its history.

WSU has been dabbling in this area for a number of years and they can utilize some of the R&D from NIAR to progress a number of artificial options in the future. It'll take some time, but between the Bio-Med campus, NIAR, engineering, and other areas I really do think this is something that could become a big deal in the industry and I know local hospitals are already pretty excited about the future possibilities and look forward to working with WSU in this area.

WSU is going to soon pass KU in research dollar. WSU has already passed KSU. I have heard that some KSU folks say "that's not a fair comparison" b/c much of WSU's research is private industry. Which to me, is much better than some of the government boondoggle grants.

According to the Eagle this morning The study would also contain actual plans for facilities to be incorporated into the second phase of the ne Medical building down town. The request for 5 million was approved by the KBOR but would need to be put into the budget for next year by the governor and passed by the legislature. Large hurdles indeed but I am optimistic. As pointed out in the article the School of Health Sciences already has the only BS program for Dental Hygiene and only Dental Residency program in the state.
