WBJ - WSU Tech, Wesley unveil designs for new health-care CTE centers

The public-private partners involved an effort to make entry-level health care careers more accessible to graduating Wichita high school students have finalized design plans for two new training centers.

A collaboration between WSU Tech, Wichita Public Schools and Wesley Medical Center will establish the Health Science Future Ready Centers — one at WSU Tech's south campus and another at Wesley. Current high school students will be able to earn college credits and receive the necessary credentials for jobs as a certified nursing aid, for example, immediately after graduation.

WSU Tech president Sheree Utash said during a media event Tuesday that the effort will also help address a shortage of health care workers in the local workforce.

"There are currently over 1,000 job openings in health-care jobs across the metropolitan region," Utash said, "so I feel quite confident that all of you students are going to have a very, very well-paying career in the health-care field."

WSU continues to put forth an effort to train young people for good jobs that are very much in need and will only continue to be needed.

WSU - WSU wins $750K NSF grant to improve graduation rates among low-income engineering students

As Wichita State University celebrates record enrollment, the university is bolstering its student success initiatives to increase graduation rates. As part of those efforts, the National Science Foundation has awarded WSU researchers $750,000 to increase persistence rates among low-income engineering students, particularly those who are interested in advanced manufacturing careers.

The project — titled “Improved Persistence to Degree Completion through Enhanced Engineering Identity” — was borne from statistics that show that low-income students have lower degree-completion rates than their typical-income peers in engineering. It has also been shown that engineering students who identify with the profession have a greater likelihood of graduating.

“When we looked at low-income and typical-income students going from sophomore to junior year, we see that the typical-income group seemed to do much better than the low-income group,” said Dr. Gary Brooking, chair of engineering technology at Wichita State and principal investigator. “And when we look at graduation data, low-income students are at a much lower graduation rate than our typical-income students.”

The grant is aimed at helping turn that trend around, said Dr. Jan Twomey, associate dean of the WSU College of Engineering and one of the co-principal investigators on the grant.

Recruitment for the program will begin while the students are in high school. Brooking said the team will work closely with high school teachers and guidance counselors to identify low-income, high-achieving students who are interested in engineering as a career.

“We will look at things like GPA, but those aren’t always the best indicators of a student’s ability,” he said. “We really think it’s the teachers who interact with them in high school who are going to be critical in identifying candidates for this program.”

WSU quietly updated their master plan map as of August 2022, updating the most recent Innovation Campus master plan map from 2017 and overall university map from 2014.

Couple things to note - The original plan for the Innovation Campus, which was seen as audacious and by some overly ambitious, has been met and then some in under 10 years time. The new 2022 update makes changes from 2017 (which saw many expansions and changes from 2014), and expands the ambitions even more.

More partnership buildings added to the limited space, a re-imagining of the 21st and Oliver corner to be more apartments and mixed use (changed from retail only), and the new NIAR building funded by BBB grant money are highlights.

WSU continues to try and make a positive impact on young girls and exposing them to STEM fields.

“A lot of girls may know about a very narrow range of STEM careers and a lot of them may be thinking about medical fields, those kinds of things, and so we want to really expose them to the breadth of different types of careers,” organizer and Wichita State professor Moriah Beck said.

According to the American Association of University Women, right now, women only make up 28% of the workforce in the STEM field. Beck said the event is important because it exposes girls to positive role models.

“I do hope that it is something that makes an impression on them,” she said.

“Even if they don't go towards a STEM career, that they just realize how important it is to follow your passion.”

That's a really well-done video, and I'm shocked at how pimp the new b-school is. That facility alone will bump total enrollment at WSU by a noticeable amount. WSU has always had a proud b-school, but man... Clinton Hall was not helping to attract students, especially since KU and K-State built facilities similar to Woolsey within the past few years.

KSN - Free training at WSU Tech for aviation jobs

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — There is a demand for skilled workers in Wichita, and one area school is offering to train people for the jobs for free.

WSU Tech offers the Wichita Promise full-ride scholarship program to help support the aviation and manufacturing sectors throughout the region. Classes begin in January, and the training takes eight to 10 weeks.

Students who complete the program will leave with a certificate, job opportunities and no college debt. The scholarship is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

The more I read about this, the more I like it. I know some hate all things KU and I get that, but this really does sound like something that will move to improve medical care amongst the disciplines and lead to a fuller education for all. Which should translate to better services for the people of Kansas. Somewhere in the article it mentions that an average of 700 people die per day due to medical error, and most of these errors are due to breakdowns in communication.

Already, KU, WSU and WSU Tech collaborate with some training programs.

WSU Tech, for example, hosts a simulated mass casualty event each year in April that involves a cross-section of students from three institutions.

KU and Wichita State also partner on a program developed by the Department of Defense and the Agency or Healthcare Research and Quality to integrate teamwork into practice. Called TeamSTEPPS, the program involves students from all of the health professions programs at WSU and the medical and pharmacy students at KU — about 300 students combined. KU and WSU alternate as host sites, including about 28 sessions throughout the year with groups of 20 students.

"It is focused on how do we communicate in the same language, so to speak?" Doyle asked. "How do we know what we're expecting from other people? How do we close that loop in communication so we don't have so many missed communications or errors?"

Article also talks about the ability of both schools to save millions as they would no longer each have to have some of their own expensive equipment as they could now buy one instead of two and share as needed.

This is a very small matter when it comes to the whole picture/concept. What are we going to call this complex? Wichita School of Medicine or perhaps Wichita School of Health, Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita My least favorite would be anything similar to what it is now...University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita. It will be interesting to see who gets what in the name.
