      • Newsmakers: Bardo, Tomblin leading implementation of Wichita State's innovation campu

An experiential engineering building will be the first building constructed on the innovation campus. That project will start later this spring. Bardo and Tomblin see the potential for construction to start on four or five new buildings in 2015.

What's your outlook for 2015? JB: The innovation campus process is going to continue and there's going to be a number of groundbreakings, announcements coming up this spring as we get a lot of this in hand. The first really big issue was the closing of the bonds. The fact the bonds sold at a premium allows us to do some things that we were fretting over how we were going to get the funding. JT: I think we'll have a number of announcements of companies interested in the innovation campus. The relationships those companies have with the university is basically geared around how to grow the work force of the future.

        • After Final Four, Wichita State Univ with more new students in Fall 2014 than KU . .

Can 5 guys on court change course of university?

The nation was in love with this team they’d never heard of and even the watch-if-it-happens-to-be-on kind of college basketball fan now knew WuShock was wheat.

Then there’s this other really amazing spike - growth like the university had never seen. Between 2013 and 2014, the applicants for students considering Wichita State nearly doubled from 2874 to 5120.

According to Bardo, the university is currently marketing to a potential freshman pool of 209,000 students. He says two years ago, the university only bought the names of 13,000 ACT students.

“The dominating part has to do with the mission of the university and how we’ve positioned our marketing process. We’re using a lot more direct marketing than historically universities have done in the Midwest. It is something that is pretty typical on the east and west coasts, but it isn’t done regularly here. So we have increased our reach a lot. We have defined marketing areas where it is more likely students will be willing to leave to come to a university as a residential student,” said Bardo.

There is also a brand new $65 million residential hall, the student center just underwent a $33 million renovation, and there's a huge, new innovation campus in the works right now.

              • This is a pretty neat story about a lady in unfortunate circumstances that gets new opportunities through her education at Wichita State.

The story of alumna Nisha Jackson demonstrates that the efforts of Wichita State University's programs to help students succeed are more about compassion than obligation.

They have an innovation basement lab and an innovation garage. Not a bad start. Imagine what they will come up with when they have an entire campus!

                          • From a column authored by President John Bardo:

Wichita State aims to help students take lessons from the classroom to the workplace

We are encouraged by serious discussions with local, national and international companies interested in locating facilities on the university’s new Innovation Campus. We expect this year and next to bring announcements of private developers financing buildings on the new campus and companies committing to occupy those buildings and employ our students in meaningful research.

There’s progress on many fronts. We were recently among 25 universities selected to join the Pathways to Innovation Program. It is designed to help institutions fully incorporate innovation and entrepreneurship into undergraduate engineering education – a top priority for us that will be advanced by the recent Koch Industries and Koch Foundation support for our new Koch Innovation Challenge and the Community Maker Space on the Innovation Campus.

The next big items we’re seeking to fund on the new part of campus are a new Innovation Center and Business School.

All of this activity is in support of WSU’s strategic vision to be internationally recognized as the model for applied learning and research. That means that we expect every single one of our graduates, no matter what their academic program, to have a professional and/or research experience that will prepare them for the workforce.
