Wichita State University student-athletes, coaches and staff members devoted Monday to community service at places such as AbilityPoint, Catholic Charities Harbor House and the Kansas Humane Society.
Serve-A-Thon 2023 matched 173 student-athletes, coaches and staff members with projects ranging from cleanup at Clapp Park to setting up a shelter for HumanKind Ministries to assembling lunches for Meals on Wheels.
"We wanted people to serve the community as one team," said Brooke Schultz, student-athlete experience coordinator. "We had a great turnout. For year one we were really excited with how it went and we know all of the organizations we served were really appreciative."
The Shockers totaled 341 hours to push the athletic department to its goal of more than 1,000 hours of community service this year.
