  • Other Kansas News From Outside The Metro

What the hell?! Sometimes there are things that happen outside of the area that are news worthy or interesting. So here we go. This one made me chuckle a bit, but I do get that it could be of value to the community.

KWCH - Worth its salt?: Lyons receives $14K to build unique attraction

The City of Lyons is using a state grant to launch a unique construction project toward its goal of drawing more visitors to its community. The city’s plan is to build the world’s largest salt shaker.

The plan surprised many in Lyons when they heard about their town’s next project.

“We’re going to have a tourist attraction, draw some attention,” said Mike’s Furniture Store Manager Many Hogg.

That excitement in the community is what Lyons Community Development Coordinator Alicia Hommon said she wants to see.

“It’ll give someone a reason to drive into downtown Lyons and see what we have going on down here,” Hommon said.

In a few months, plans call for the world’s largest salt shaker to call a corner of downtown Lyons home and attract more traffic.

“Rural America and rural Kansas is struggling right now because we need those tax dollars coming in, people coming in to see who we are, spending money in our commercial quarter,” Hommon said.

A state grant from the Kansas Department of Commerce awarded Lyons nearly $14,000 to build a city attraction. The decision to build the world’s biggest salt shaker ties in with the town’s connection with salt.
I get wanting to build something that may draw people in to help the economy. I support that. I know there are people who are drawn to such attractions so it may have more value than I think. I'm simply not someone that goes out of my way to see or find such attractions.

I have seen the well in Greensburg as a kid. I think that had more to do with it was on the way to Dodge City so we stopped. I've never seen Big Brutus. I've never made the trip out to see the ball of twine. I'm not sure if Kansas has any other biggest/largest attractions.

I hope it draws enough to help local businesses and potentially ease some of the tax burden on those in the town. Perhaps I'm just different as I'm drawn more to nature and natural features than man made ones. Though I do like a good museum from time to time.

Not new news, but out of curiosity based on the above news, I decided to see if I could find some roadside attractions across the state. So I found this Roadside America site and here's what they have.

The Worlds Largest Ball of Twine - Cawker City (I'm not sure where Cawker City is)

Cosmosphere - Hutchinson (Who hasn't been here?)

The Garden of Eden - Lucas (I'm not sure where Lucas is and this is apparently some weird folk art. I might actually be interested...)

Grassroots Art Center - Lucas (Apparently a lot of strange art from strange things. What's going on in Lucas?)

Famous Gunfighters Wax Museum - Dodge City (I don't think I've been here, but I might have seen it as a kid)

The Strange Grave of John Milburn Davis - Hiawatha (Should I know who this guy is?)

Strataca: Underground Salt Museum - Hutchinson (This is something I've meant to check out but haven't)

Geographical Center of the 48 States - Lebanon (The reason Supernatural put an emphasis on Lebanon)

Dorothy's House and Land of Oz - Liberal (How the hell did Liberal get Oz recognition?)

Johnny Kaw, Bigger Than Bunyan - Manhattan (They're over-compensating)

Political Art of M.T. Liggett - Mullinville (No clue where Mullinville is. Not sure I'm interested enough to find out.)

Truckhenge - Topeka (Anywhere but Topeka and maybe)

Evel Knievel Museum - Topeka (I may check this out one day, even though it requires going to Topeka)

Climb the Statehouse Dome - Topeka (Nope)

Oz Museum - Wamego (This one makes more sense and I'd actually consider stopping in here. Oz is legendary and this one sounds more legit)

Big Brutus - West Mineral (I've seen the signs. I'm sure the size is impressive, I'm just not sure if I'll ever make it there)

Dalton Defenders Museum - Coffeyville (I like history and this intrigues me)

Dalton Death Sidewalk - Coffeyville (I'm not laying down)

He Killed Lincoln's Killer, Then Lived In A Hole - Concordia (He lived in a hole? And this hole is still a thing? The curiosity might be enough)

That "Grow a Beard, Abe!" Town - Delphos (I really don't care)

Boot Hill and Museum - Dodge City (I've been there as a kid and wouldn't mind going back. The Old West intrigues me)

La Salsa Muffler Man - Dodge City (If I'm in the area maybe. Commissioned by Dennis Hopper makes it a little more intriguing)

Worlds Largest Easel - Goodland (They might get me just because it's a Van Gogh painting on the easel)

The Big Well - Greensburg (Been there as a kid. Not sure I'd go back)

Valeda The Talking Transparent Woman - Halstead (I don't know what to think, but it's near enough that maybe?)

This is their list of the top rated. I'm going to do a follow up post with the others just because I'm bored and this is kind of interesting to me.

Can't recommend the Garden of Eden in Lucas unless weird, kitschy things are your jam. HOWEVER, it's a beautiful drive into Lucas and they have Brandt's Market where you can get some of the best sausage and meats you can find. Wonderful place. Worth the 20 minutes or so off I-70 (count on an hour round trip off and back on 70 if you go to Brandt's)? For me, yes but YMMV.

Worth the 20 minutes or so off I-70 (count on an hour round trip off and back on 70 if you go to Brandt's)? For me, yes but YMMV.
Lucas is apparently all about strange art.

This list was much larger than I expected. I might have to make a game out of going to these places. Would be a fun way to take the bike out on the weekends and do something different.

First sub, your anti-Topeka snobbishness is a bit much. I've lived in Topeka for 21 years and love it. And it comes across just like some JoCo douches say about Wichita. Keep that in mind. Reeks of insecurity about Wichita.

My late-mother is from Lyons and I still have relatives there and it a great small town. Picturesque courthouse square. There is a salt mine on the outskirts of town so a huge salt shaker makes a bit of sense. I have a lot of stories about Lyons that I may or may not share.

I am a Kansas nerd and have stopped by a whole lot of stuff on these various lists.

I haven’t heard of all of those things, so I have a few things to visit on my travels.

Things I’ve done/seen that I recommend, in no order.

Big Well in Greensburg – must stop and see. It is incredible to think this was dug with shovels and buckets and ropes.

Mt. Sunflower – every Kansan needs to summit the peak. Kansas’ highest elevation is higher than 21 other state highest points. Pack a lot of water and first-aid kit.

Biggest Ball of Twine – the locals will tell you not to touch it because folks like to pee on it.

Dodge City - must see. They have a new visitors center/museum along with the older Front Street. I think we Kansans don’t appreciate our Western heritage like we should. 90% of the Who’s Who of the American West spent some or a LOT of time in Kansas. Bat Masterson is WAY under-rated.

Big Brutus – must see. The bucket can fit six SUVs in it, I believe. When you climb on board and to the top, you feel like you are on an ocean vessel.

Biggest Easel in Goodland – worth stopping. It is a replication of Van Gogh’s “Sunflowers”

Amelia Earhart museum and hanger: An ABSOLUTE must see. They just had a ribbon-cutting. It is a national/world class museum with a ton of interactive stuff. And they have a hologram of Earhart. Earhart is a very under-rated Kansan. Her story is really incredible and inspiring. She was much more than a pilot. Here is a great quote from AE: “What do dreams know of boundaries.”

Little church in Garfield. If you are in Larned, headed to Dodge, stop and see it.

Ft. Larned: one of the best, if not the best preserved frontier forts in America. While many US frontier forts were simply abandoned, Ft. Larned was bought by a rancher and thus he maintained the buildings. It is in a cool setting: the beginning of the high plains of America.

Castle Rock and Monument Rocks: very neat West/SW landscape.

Kansas State Capital and Visitors Center: very well done and it is free. And if you have the guts, go to the top of the dome.

Abilene: Presidential Museum and lots of others cool things.

                    Sternberg Museum in Hays

Brown vs BOE in Topeka – must see

                    Buffalo Bill stuff in Oakley

Kansas History Museum in Topeka (going thru renovation)

Victoria: Cathedral of the Plains. Surprised it didn’t make the list of stuff in tiny Victoria.

This I haven’t seen but need to:
                    Underground Ellinwood
                    Little Jerusalem
Evil Knievel museum (it will be moving to Las Vegas)
Dalton stuff in Coffeyville and Meade

KSNT - Kansas parks, wineries, theaters get $30M boost

Some of the recipients are receiving awards in the millions of dollars. That includes the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, which is set to receive $10 million. Amelia Earhart Hangar Museum in Atchison, Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City and Historic Jayhawk Theater in Topeka, will each receive $5 million. Azura Ampitheater in Bonner Springs, and the Kansas African American Museum and Cultural Center in Wichita, will each receive $1 million.

“Increasing the appeal of our state parks and other tourist attractions will have a notable impact on local communities as well as the entire Kansas economy,” Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland said. “The SPRINT awards support major projects that will attract new visitors across the state.”

Visitor spending, which generates a total annual economic impact of $11.2 billion in Kansas, has yet to return fully to pre-pandemic levels.

“Tourism is an important aspect of the Kansas economy, a sector in which 85,000 Kansans already are employed,” Senate President Ty Masterson said. “From parks to other attractions, Kansas has so much to offer those traveling and seeking to learn more about our state. The SPRINT grants will help ensure they remain vibrant for decades to come.”

I started this thread in hopes of finding things in parts of the state that don't get as much publicity, but this news out of KC metro is worth mentioning.

KC Star - Schlitterbahn redevelopment plans add new arena, golf, museum, Margaritaville resort

Previously described as a “youth sports mecca,” the Homefield development envisions adding indoor and outdoor sports facilities, hotels, apartments and retail to the former waterpark site.

New to the development plan is a BigShots Golf entertainment complex. Similar to the uber-popular Topgolf brand, BigShots offers a variety of golf-themed games for experts and amateurs alike. The KCK location would include an onsite restaurant and bar as well as outdoor miniature golf.

“Avid golfers can play full rounds on virtual golf courses all over the world, while beginners, families and children can take part in interactive games that give everyone a chance to win,” the company said in a press release earlier this year announcing its expansion to KCK and other markets.

The complex also would include a new “immersive museum” concept created with Kansas City-based Dimensional Innovations. Called Atlas 9, the 30,000-square-foot facility is described as “a magically-transformed movie theater” in planning documents. It would include multiple installations, interactive and live performances, as well as a 250-seat auditorium, concession stand and gift shop.
                              .....
Homefield is also working to secure an agreement for a 55,000-square-foot indoor arena that can host sports practices and games, live music and e-sports. The company is also finalizing deals to bring in a new Hilton Garden Inn, a pickleball entertainment complex and used car chain Super Car Guys, Napper said.

In addition to an indoor training facility, the development would include eight outdoor baseball fields.
                              .....
Homefield still plans to bring the metro area’s first Margaritaville resort and hotel to its project. Named after Jimmy Buffet’s song of the same name, that chain is known for big yet laid-back properties. Margaritaville has resorts at popular destinations like Lake of the Ozarks, Nashville, Palm Springs and the Bahamas.

The 230-room hotel would include a “Land Shark” restaurant, and an indoor pool with a rock climbing wall and a ninja course.
After the tragedy and ultimate failure of the water park, something needed to be done. This sounds like a good something that should generate traffic and revenue for the area.
