Royals ink five more Draft picks to deals

KANSAS CITY -- The Royals have signed five more draft picks, bringing the total up to 25.

Since Saturday, the Royals have announced the signings of pitcher right-handed Alec Mills (22nd round), right-handed pitcher Kevin Allen (23rd round), first baseman Mark Donato (26th round), right-handed pitcher Ashton Goudeau (27th round) and outfielder Ethan Chapman (30th round).

Also, with the Stanford Cardinal being eliminated from the NCAA tournament, the Royals are free to negotiate with their fourth-round pick, shortstop Kenny Diekroeger.

Second-round pick Selman close to signing

KANSAS CITY -- Second-round Draft pick Sam Selman was in Kansas City on Wednesday to have a physical examination, a Royals club official confirmed, and his signing appears imminent.

Selman, a left-handed pitcher out of Vanderbilt, is the teams' last remaining top-10 pick that has yet to sign.

In 17 games with the Commodores this season, Selman went 9-3 with a 3.55 ERA. He struck out 80 batters and walked 43 over 76 innings pitched.

Second-round pick Selman signs deal

KANSAS CITY -- Second-round Draft choice Sam Selman, a left-handed pitcher from Vanderbilt University, has signed with the Royals, the club announced on Thursday.

Selman, 21, had a 9-3 record and a 3.55 ERA in 17 games this year as a junior for the Commodores. The 6-3, 185-pound Selman is a product of St. Andrews High in Austin, Texas.

He was the 66th player taken overall in the First-Year Player Draft. Terms were not announced but he was believed to have signed for less than the $781,600 slotting figure.

A Look At Early Stats From The Royals 2012 Draft Class

One of the better provisions in the new collective bargaining agreement called for the draft pick signing deadline to be moved up. Last year at this time, many potential Royals were still negotiating.

This year, with an earlier deadline, many draftees were signed quickly, and the Royals signed all but nine of their selections in the 2012 draft (and 28 of their top 30 picks), highlighted by Kyle Zimmer in the first round.

Most of this year’s draft picks have been assigned to short-season rookie leagues which are approaching the midway point in their seasons, so it seems like a good enough time to check in and see how the 2012 draft class has performed so far.

Some have done well – Zimmer just got promoted to Kane County, Colin Rodgers has been nearly unhittable and Kenny Diekroeger and Fred Ford are leading what is known as the “Burlington Bomb Squad”. Others are struggling in their first weeks as a pro player.
