Well if you're gonna get mugged at gun point, do it in your absolute favorite area, I always say...

I've lived here for the last 17 years in Johnson County after living my first 36 in Wichita. Personally I wouldn't want to live in downtown KCMO, the Plaza or Westport. The crime rate is higher in those areas and I must admit that the bar scene does not hold the appeal it once did. Seeing how you are not real find of suburban life it sounds like, you might be interested in living close to the downtown areas of one of the other cities in the region. Downtown Overland Park is going through a resurgence and I really like the downtown area of Lee's Summit on the Missouri side.

Às far as weather, yes you often get a 3 or 4 degree difference. We still get plenty of wind, but with the rolling hills over a lot of the area, I don't think you feel it as much.

Traffic is bad compared to Wichita, but not compared to other large cities. The food and beer scene is good and probably one of the things I like best about living here. The BBQ places are world class and once you have tried some of the best, you will think a lot of the BBQ places in other places are trash.

Lastly, I think Wichita has a true small town feel compared to here. I suppose that is good is some ways and maybe not as much in other ways. People are definitely not rude here, but definitely a little friendlier brand of stranger in Wichita. The last comment I would leave you with is this. The Shockers are an afterthought here. The rarely make sports talk radio or the nightly newscast. This is Big 12 country and KU gets the lion's share of the media coverage in this area. KU fans probably outnumber Kstate and Mizzou fans combined 2 to 1.

I have a LOT of friends in KC. Every one of them thinks it's the center of the universe.

Definitely want to be near the cultural center and preferably up in the sky a ways. I'm not a big drinker so it's not for the bar scene although they will be utilized. I don't mind hustle and bustle or too-busy-to-be friendly people. I felt right at home in NYC. I want to be a few steps away from live music, good eats, a nice park, a financial district, a major airport, art crawls and museums. KC's major sports are a nice bonus although I'm not really a football or baseball fan (only Shocker baseball) - certainly not soccer.

The center of the universe you say? That's just where I belong!!

The social opportunities (particularly for single, professional folks who aren't in their 20's) are one of my biggest reasons for moving away. This place is just dead for that demographic. If you're not working at an aircraft plant with 2.5 children, a pickup truck, and daydreaming of your next fishing/hunting trip, you are misplaced. I don't hunt, I don't pickup truck, and I don't rear children. That makes me somewhat of an oddball at my age.

There is absolutely no financial industry culture in this town either outside of tiny pockets in Koch and Cargill.

If you want to be by a major airport not sure KC offers that. For one it's far outside the city and secondly it's not what I would call major.

I second your recommendation of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in KC. My wife actually visited this museum one of the years the Shocks were playing in the tournament at the Sprint Arena. I found it very interesting and enjoyed it very much. I was a bit surprised as well regarding how much my wife enjoyed it.

The World War I Museum is very impressive as well. Not so much from the outide but is outstanding once your in the museum.

From your likes and dislikes, I would probably suggest the West Plaza area then. You would obviously be right on their by the Plaza, the Nelson Atkins and Kemper Art Museum are very close by. Westport will be just to the North and there are lots of high rises (fairly high) . If you go the east side of the Plaza, past Main, I just don't feel like the housing is as nice. Go a little farther North 20-25 blocks and your in the Crossroads district which has been a developing arts, cultural and entertainment district for the last decade. Just past that and your in the downtown area and the Power and Light district. Anyway, from your likes and dislikes that is what sounds like would be a good area in my opinion

Same for Denver. Airport is maybe a little more “major” but it’s not exactly close to anything, much less what you desire.

                          Sounds like you got pwned!

Try this one...there's no crime on Catalina Island:

This one's on New Year's Eve, at the Starr Pass Marriott in Tucson. No crime there, either.....https://www.rickbraunnewyearseve.com/venue/

They're having a 'virtual' event this year, but in the past, it was a great place to celebrate. And the resort has a great golf course. But since it is adjacent to federal (either the Saguaro National Park or an Indian reservation, I'm not sure) you might 'discover' some wildlife, like the time I came face to face with the biggest Javelina I have ever seen, rooting around one of the buildings, and I was between him and the trail. I moved backwards very slowly.....he had some really big tusks.

Thank you for the specific and customized recommendations. I really enjoy tooling around the P&L area, but I take it that's not really a residential zone.

I will check out West Plaza and Crossroads. If my memory serves there's a nice park near the Plaza too.

I probably shouldn't have included "major airport" in my list of things I wanted to be "a few steps away from". I was being more generalized when mentioning the airport (like being in the same city as). Nobody wants to be literally walking distance from an airport lol. And I did know it was north of town.

Now, in regards to not calling it major... compared to the amateur hour operation we have going on in Wichita, I'm confident calling it major.

Imagine getting a flight out of Wichita to NYC for $25? Or San Francisco for $33? Or Washington D.C., Miami, Tampa, or Cleveland for $34?

                              https://www.skyscanner.com/flights-f...l-airport.html

Living in a place like K.C. literally opens up the rest of the world to you - even for a weekend getaway.

Downtown has some nice high rises, similar to the Plaza and some loft style condos, with some nice ones around Union Station area that are converted old warehouse buildings. Just to the North of downtown is the River Market area. The market itself offers kind of an international experience, with vendors selling produce, fresh food and coffee from different places around the world. So yes, downtown would be another good option.
The Plaza would offer quicker freedom of movement in a car to other parts of the city and you will most likely have less homeless, vagrant types roaming the streets outside your building. On the plus side the arena would be in walking distance for concerts and sporting events and I-70 is right there to head east towards the sports complex.

I heard someone mention the airport and thought I would respond indirectly here that it is currently under a billion dollar redo and will be much more of a major airport when finished.
