You are right, those are two different things. The key difference is the Mayo Clinic study was too early to glean final conclusions about delta.

Because of limited sequenced virus, Delta-specific VE was not assessed.
The best they could was to isolate results from June and July (through July 14) as Delta was just starting to ramp. Here is what Delta looked like in the US at that time (Delta = B.1.167.2 and for all practical purposes AY.3):

The efficacy against severe disease dropped 3% from 87% to 84% over that six week period. There simply isn't enough data to know if it continued to decline as delta continued to ramp up and now overwhelms the result.

We are being told the J&J study is specifically against a delta environment, but that may be B.S. or it may be spot on -- won't know 'til it's published.

71% may trump both Moderna and Pfizer in a pure delta environment. Or it may fall well short. There's just not enough data to know yet.

    • Fresh data out of Israel!

10 days after Pfizer booster shots yielded 4x as much protection against infection as two doses in people 60 and older. The level of protection was 5-6x higher against serious illness and hospitalization.

Get on it WuDrWu and others!

So go with common sense and expert consensus brother until something absolutely compelling slaps you straight in the face. J&J have been shitting their pants since this whole deal started. Same with AstraZeneca... those deceptive bastards.

Of course the predictable response is lockdown until we get better masks.
In case anybody wants to fact check me, I was saying these masks were worthless all the back in the spring of 2020. The gaslighting on this pandemic has been absolutely eye-popping.

That is a 100% factual comment.
Of course that’s a factual response, but it contains to information on how much Covid is aerosolized or how much it required for infection. If it only takes 20% of the aerosolized Covid to cause infection, then 10% reduction isn’t very helpful is it?

Considering that dosage of initial virus exposure is one of the factors that determine severity of infection, I would say it does. Anything and everything that lowers the amount of virus entering your body (fresh air circulation, masking, distance, face angle, etc.) is a good thing.

Clearly it's not a good idea to be in a Covid ward w/ a shitty mask. But out in the real world, it just might tip the scales on whether or not you get a nasty case or a poor man's inoculation. Like the author said, it's always better to have a face covering than not.

              In conclusion:

              • A South Carolina GOP leader who called face masks an 'illusion' has died from COVID-19

The GOP leader of a South Carolina county died from COVID-19 after pushing false statements about the disease and downplaying restrictions like mask-wearing.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, Pressley Stutts, chair of the Greenville Tea Party, had been a vocal skeptic of coronavirus-related guidance and safety ordinances released by national health agencies. Last year, he called face masks an "illusion" in a Facebook post and falsely claimed the people in the US "have a 99.999% of not dying from the Wuhan virus."

He also cheered on unvaccinated doctors and nurses and criticized vaccination mandates. "Mandates and coercions DO NOT WORK especially when they come to us from a government that has repeatedly lied to the American People time and time again," he wrote.
Pretty horrific, but an interesting case study into the process of awakening to reality... the hard way.

                Awakenings Phase 1

Pressley — from an ICU hospital bed — continued to downplay the coronavirus. After being admitted into the hospital in early August, he wrote in a Facebook post that "COVID is nothing to fool with and in as much as possible, it is up to you to take the best precautions for you and your family to avoid getting it."
                Awakenings Phase 2

About two weeks later, Pressley called the virus "hell on earth" in another post.
                Awakenings Phase 3

"When you have to take every single ounce just to get your next breath, you know you are in the battle for your life!" he wrote in that Facebook post. "I IMPLORE YOU....PLEASE PRAY THAT GOD MOVES MIGHTILY IN MY BODY. ISOLATED. DON'T KNOW HOW MUCH LONGER I CAN ENDURE WITHOUT YOUR PRAYERS. SERIOUSLY!"
                Awakenings Phase 4

Pressley's final Facebook post, published on August 13 just days before his death, said he was going on a ventilator. He also promised to "wake up from this short rest and be back in the game soon."

Now he dead. Gotta give the fool credit though, he never broke like most of the others imploring his followers to get the vaccine. So that means he won?

Didn't have to be this way. Just one tiny example of the cost of the politicization of Covid-19. The hundreds of thousands (millions?) who have suffered silently because of it, should never be forgotten.

Anybody ready to say, "Enough is enough!" and just start opening your hearts and minds to what we face? Start listening to the doctors and giving them the benefit of the doubt? No? Not ready yet?

                • I'm really not sure what the point is of these "gotcha" posts are. Does Covid only effect the deniers or something? Are there people in the hospital who believe the virus is real? Are there Democrats who have died from the virus? Have people died believing in the virus? Since the virus got them, does that make them any less smarter?

Anyone want to explain how Vermont is #1 in fully vaccinated residents, and also is #2 in highest COVID hospitalization rate over past 2 weeks, and #3 in new cases?

They probably dropped their mask mandate, I would guess.

Interstate travel and Covidiot governors. Viruses don't recognize state or nation borders.

Also, 67% vaccinated ain't even close to enough. May as well be 45.

                          • In a state with the nation's second lowest rate of vaccination against the coronavirus, a jump in the number of calls to poison control has prompted warnings about ingesting the drug ivermectin.

Mississippi Is Pleading With People To Stop Using A Livestock Drug To Treat COVID-19

Mississippi health officials are pleading with residents not to take a medicine meant for cows and horses as an alternative to getting the COVID-19 vaccine.

In a state with the nation's second lowest rate of vaccination against the coronavirus, a jump in the number of calls to poison control prompted an alert Friday from the Mississippi State Department of Health about ingesting the drug ivermectin. The department said that at least 70% of recent calls to the state poison control center were related to people who ingested a version of the drug that is formulated to treat parasites in cows and horses.

Ingesting the drug can lead to a rash, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, neurologic disorders and potentially severe hepatitis requiring hospitalization, according to the alert written by Dr. Paul Byers, the state's top epidemiologist.
The FDA is also urging people to stop

Ivermectin is sometimes prescribed to people for head lice or skin conditions, but the formulas are different for humans and animals.

"Animal drugs are highly concentrated for large animals and can be highly toxic in humans," Byers wrote in the alert.

Given that cows and horses can easily weigh more than 1,000 pounds, and sometimes more than a ton, the amount of ivermectin meant for livestock would not be suitable for a human who weighs a fraction of that.

The Food and Drug Administration has also weighed in, writing in a tweet this weekend, "You are not a horse. You are not a cow. Seriously, y'all. Stop it."

                              • Healthcare worker who had COVID last year, vaccinated this year with Pfizer, now has COVID, again.

Until the “vaccine” stops you from GETTING COVID, it will continue to mutate.

So either everyone gets it and has antibodies at same time, or “vaccine” works like other Vaccines and stops you from getting the disease like Small Pox, Measles, Etc.

But these Viruses are different and will never be prevented.
