Abby "Her Airness" Wambach with another game winning header against France, this time on a set piece.

France had a lot of good opportunities that they did not cash in on.

Japan will be tough match in the finals. They apparently can really control the ball. It will be their technical excellence vs the power and toughness of the USA ladies.

Hope apparently had a really bad shoulder injury that she went through a tough rehab on and it still bothers her, but she has certainly proved to be a valuable piece of the USA team in the World Cup.

I know. She has a hell of a competitive spirit and is one hell of a goalie. Being a looker is just a bonus. I hope to actually be able to watch the Final.

Plus, Solo laid full out on the injured right shoulder to save that penalty kick in the Brazil game.

At the end of the day, the two most important things in soccer are the ability to finish your scoring opportunities and have a keeper who can stop great scoring opportunities of your opponent. This team, in spite of being sloppy with possession a lot of the time, has shown both of those attributes. They keep giving up more scoring opportunities than they create, but they capitalize at a far higher rate than they allow their opponents to.

Japan will be a tough test because they are a very well organized side that has been playing well, and it should be a great match. I'm looking forward to it.

One more game starting at 1PM tomorrow. I don't really care for soccer that much, but I have enjoyed the American games in the Worlds Cup. Doubt it will become a regular viewing thing outside of Olympics and World Cups and I still can't stand men's soccer even at that level.

Scoring update or game / match update.

Japan Nill, USA Nill after 47 miuntes.

What a terrible event, I guess it gives a bunch of lesbians something to do if they are not good enough to play softball.

Japan routs America, Nill + 2, Nill + 2 at the end of regulation, Nill + 3, Nill + 1 in a shootout.

I don't understand how when you get the lead you then quit attacking. The Japanese where on their heals for most the game when the US was attacking then you take your foot off their throats a let them get back up - you U.S. deserved what they got.

There is a difference between being conservative vs passive, just like there is a difference between being aggressive vs reckless and both are often confused. In the later stages of regulation, our passive play was reckless, while conservative (not taking undue chances) aggressiveness (driving, forceful energy) might have worked better.

When a team has a close, late lead, more times than not, stalling outside of a team's normal style of play (think basketball) or prevent defense (think football) backfires.

Subbing out Abby's girlfriend late was an error imho, and was a death blow in the PKs.

But no doubt a failure to finish for 80 minutes of regulation was the deciding factor. The US should have won easily, but that's why they play the game.

I thought the same thing, however, by that time, their style of play was no longer utilitizing what Rapinoe could offer.

I don't agree with this. I watched Japan in other games and they looked very strong. Their attacking was high in technique relative to the rest of the field and I told my pop there was a good chance we will lose this game. If they play it again, I still think Japan would come out on top. They just have that good of an offense.

The USA's inability to finish numerous opportunities early did come back to haunt them. Still they were in a position to win the game twice and failed to hold off Japan when it counted.

The goal that tied the game at 1-1 was an absolute gift by the USA.

Not to take anything away from Japan as they dominated the PK-off, but it should never have gotten to that point.

Dare I use the "C" word. Maybe, maybe not, but the USA simply played poorly when they went into passive or prevent mode after taking the lead at the end of regulation and at the end of the overtime period.

                                27 shots - 14
                                8 corners - 4
                                US - Japan
US just couldn't finish. And I still don't understand the order of who took the PKs.
